Tackle four peaks: hike Mt. Democrat, Mt. Cameron, Mt. Lincoln and Mt. Bross

  • August 24, 2013 · 5:30 AM

Take Colorado 9 to Alma. In the middle of town and on the west side of the road, look for a small sign for the road to Kite Lake. Turn here and drive a bit through a residential area. Continue 6 miles to Kite Lake. The last mile of this road can be a bit more rough, but a good-clearance 2WD should still be able to make it when the road is dry. There are restrooms and some camping spots at the trailhead. You must pay a small fee to park/camp at Kite Lake. If you park below (no fee), walk up the road to Kite Lake. We'll start by hiking Mt. Democrat, then Mt. Cameron, Mt. Lincoln and Mt. Bross. I'll post more details soon! It's considered a Class 2 hike and traverses 7.25 miles roundtrip. Starting elevation is 12,000 feet. Total elevation gain is 3,700.

Sandra I might turn around. If you don't see me on trail I will leave note on car. I'm slow and steady but slower than I thought coming back down to saddle.

I will try not to be a drag but haven't hiked in nearly 4 months and at this point would consider myself weaker than I'm used to. Does anyone have tips as far as preparation etc. I dont have all my gear with me but can prepare tonight. I've never done a 14'er. Thanks for any insight!

      will do.

Is anyone else who's planning on going interested in carpooling or camping? I might want to camp the night before, but I work a full day Friday and couldn't leave until evening.

Whether camping the night before or leaving early that morning, I'm interested in carpooling. I have a small subcompact that would probably make it to the trailhead, but it'd be great to jump in with someone with a vehicle with more clearance. I'd contribute to gas, of course.

For carpooling, I live in Edgewater. Not sure from where everyone else is coming. Thanks,
    Laura

Thanks. I'll plan to meet you there at 3:30. I think I'm bringing my dog; she's little but she's a 14er warrior. If you're opposed to a dog in your vehicle pls let me know so I can leave her behind or plan to drive.

      August 23, 2013

    • Sandra M.

No probs with dog. I don't mind. Toyota Highlander. Silver. I think I said gray earlier. Sorry, I don't know my colors. Lol. I plan to park near the gas station where there are bright lights :-)

Sandra the turn off for kite lake is a small brown road sign that says kite lake and buckskin road. It's also cty rd 8. The road is okay to drive but does have a few rough spots but cars can handle slowly so SUV should be good. The last 2.5 mi are roughest.

    • Sandra M.

      Thanks for the info :-)

I'm looking forward to this. I get to almost double my 14ers list in one day. :-)

Make sure to pack layers, plenty of fluids, snacks and maybe a sandwich or two :). Slow and steady wins with these guys. I'm probably going to look for hiking closer to kite lake after all. Will let anyone camping know.

  • Amy T.

Glad some of you can carpool! I will plan to be at horseshoe camping area if any of you make it up tonight. I drive an older white ford explorer and will make a sign with second wind on it and place on car. For those meeting at trailhead Saturday, I will hold sign and wear a neon green Nike hat and I have a green and grey kelty backpack. If cell service works,[masked] is my number.

Thanks, shld be there by 0530

Hi- I am open to carpooling if anyone wants to join me. I won't be camping Friday night. Amy, are you planning on meeting at 5:30 at the TH? Thanks!

    August 20, 2013

    • Sandra M.

Close to red rocks, along I-70 in Jefferson County. It's a huge lot and it's always packed with cars. I'm driving a gray Toyota Highlander. I'll probably park close to the gas station and will send a message here once I'm there.

This hike sounds awesome and I would love to go unfortunately I have no transportation. Is there anyone here willing to share a ride for gas $?

Hi Amy. Has the group decided to hike the night before?

      What others have you done?

      August 20, 2013

Bierstadt, Elbert, Quandary and Pikes. We attempted HC and Blanca but weren't able to summit.

YO AMY!!! You all have a great time!!! I don't believe you and I have seen civilization for a very long time! You have your group shaking hands with God while my group is watching from afar as he paints his watercolors while your coming down!

    August 20, 2013

    • Amy T.

Yes, what a fun summer, Don! I still spend my weeks working in civilization, but haven't seen weekend civilization much. Hope to see ya soon!

I believe someone told me there was a sighting of Sasquatch up there near Mt. Lincoln!

I'm looking to camp at Horseshoe Campground or Kite Lake. Horseshoe would provide more tree cover. Both are along the way to the DeCaLi trail we will take. I can make it up there by mid-afternoon on Friday.

I've never hiked before. Is this a Good/Safe trail?

    August 20, 2013

    • Amy T.

Caitlyn, if you've never hiked before, this hike would be too aggressive to start with. Sorry! There are lots of lower elevation hikes in Colorado to start with!

      1 · August 20, 2013

  • Amy T.

Kate, just back to civilization. We might be able to figure out something. What's your schedule Friday?

    August 18, 2013

  • Steve

Wish I could, but I will be out of town

    August 14, 2013

  • Dave H.

Just finished climbing these peaks yesterday and Mt Bross is officially off limits. All the trail junctions have signs at the 14000 level cut off trail listing this as keep off. I admit many sadly are bypassing these signs, but they are technically closed. All the other trails are open though for Democrat, LIncoln and Cameron.

    August 6, 2013

Not sure how, but I'm going to try to get permission to do Bross!

    August 4, 2013

    • Dorothea

A friend of mine just hiked Bross yesterday but only 5 people

      August 4, 2013

I am pretty sure Bross is blocked off and they are not allowing anyone to summit there. The other three are open though.
