Greenport (Long Island) Bike Trip

We owe our thanks for both the idea and planning to Carolyn who will be our primary host for this exciting event. In her words, " We can carry our bikes on the ferry from New London to Orient Point LI. From there, it's an easy cycle to Greenport and back. Greenport is a charming, lively town and a good place for lunch. And it has a carousel!"

Plan on meeting at 9:00AM at the New London Ferry dock to board the 9:30 ferry to Orient Point. To order tickets: https://www.longislandferry.com/default.aspx
We'll return on the 7:00PM trip.

The suggested bike route is about 26 miles round trip with very little elevation gain and about 7 hours to do it, very doable at an easy recreational pace. Although we'll be stopping for lunch, bring snacks and water for the ride.
The route: http://www.mapmyride.com/us/greenport-ny/greenport-orient-loop-route-17683492

Should you want to shorten the ride and don't mind being on your own, there are ways as the route map shows, to do just that. You could then meet the other riders at the ferry for the trip home.

Thanks for a great day! A good group. Sorry I cut out early but I had a dinner engagement that came up at the last minute (hope everyone enjoyed the frozen yogurt that I missed). And a special thanks to the weather gods for scheduling the passing rainstorm for when we were in town and ready to eat lunch. And how about the fog clearing for the approach to New London and the view of Sailfest from the water!

We got lucky with the weather and had a fine time! Easy going group and unstructured time to do what you please. Rides were in the 16 to 28 mile range, others shopped and explored the town. Thanks to Carolyn for all the planning.

Is there any reason why we wouldn't be able to take an earlier ferry? I hadn't realized it was Sailfest. Thanks!

    July 11, 2013

    • Carolyn

Val O - If your question was regarding taking an earlier ferry back home: that is certainly your prerogative: the direct route from Greenport is just due East on one road until you hit the ferry - very easy. You would just have less time to wander the town or to check out vineyards. It is definitely and easily doable to return home earlier - just let John or I know so that we aren't sending out an APB (missing person) for you. Our cell phone numbers are listed to assist with changes. If you want to get back early, but still meet up for fireworks - meet the scheduled ferry (arriving ~8:30-8:40) and call if you can't find us.

I am researching bike rental options for those that don't have an "awesome ride". I think that will be an option - likely ~$25 for the day. The "direct" route from Orient Point to Greenport is just over 8 miles - and a possibility for those that are SO not Lance Armstrong-type players. We can have a "splinter group" going direct.

FYI for those os us who would like to spend a bit of free time exploring the village. It looks like a lovely destination!

Thanks, Nance. Yes - good food, interesting place and an awesome carousel - just beautiful and fun.

  • Karen

Sorry, to cancel but after some consideration I think my biking speed will hold you all up. Have fun though.

    June 11, 2013

    • Carolyn

Hi, Karen - I am only newly returning to bicycling and we will be on the island for over 6 hours, so the pace is not going to be race-speed. If that helps?

      June 25, 2013

  • Dave

Hi just wondering is this 26 mile rt or each way?

    June 11, 2013

    • Carolyn

Hi, Dave - the Complete route is 26 miles, which includes for vistas, and time for a relaxing lunch and to explore the town of Greenport a bit.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
