Hike THE PRESERVE

NOTE: Because of the tiny parking area at the trailhead, it has been suggested that we park by 9:30 in an area 1 mile south  (parking area for Great Cedars West Conservation Area near Buddhist shrine) and use white Honda CRV shuttle car to bring everybody up to the trailhead. If you carpooled, drop off at upper trailhead and drive back down to lower lot to shuttle. Once at trailhead, check in with Carolyn at SECTA sign so we'll be ready to hit the trail at 10:00. For those of you that know me, you're welcome to park at my place at 9:00ish and car pool from there. Please contact me personally about this.

The PRESERVE is a 1000 acre wooded area bordering Westbrook, Essex and Old Saybrook. It is the last remaining undeveloped parcel of its size on the CT shoreline. The three towns are raising funds to purchase the tract and protect it for future recreational use. We will be amongst the first to hike there. See http://preserve1000acres.com/ for more info.

Carolyn and I will be your hosts for the event, but the hike will be led by Chris Cryder of savethesound.org , will be very informational and will be about 7 miles long over rolling terrain. Since there is no history of difficulty, I'm thinking that we should expect overall  moderate with possible strenuous sections. Temps will be 25 in early morning and almost 50 in the afternoon. There is snow on the trail and the freeze/melt/freeze cycle has made it icy and slippery. The afternoon warmth will make it wet, slushy and muddy slippery. MICROSPIKES AND POLES STRONGLY SUGGESTED. LEGITIMATE HIKING BOOTS AND SHOES REQUIRED. Bring water and snacks. Dressing in layers will make the dramatic temp change tolerable.

Directly after hike, join us for food and drink and meet and greet at BILLS SEAFOOD at 548 Boston Post Rd in Westbrook. See www.billsseafood.com/ for more info. Bring cash, doesn't accept credit cards. Obviously, ATM on site.

John's cell is[masked] for any last minute stuff.

Greatly appreciate everybody's cooperation with the parking situation and your patience on the trail with the "parade". I was not aware of the size until well into the planning. You guys did great! Enjoyed getting to know you over burgers. Hopefully funding for this parcel of land will go through (and I will be letting you all know how you can help) so we can enjoy for many years to come. There's still some more skiing for me to do now, but I'll be seeing you all on the trails in due time.

Beautiful piece of property. Hope they are successful in getting the funding to purchase and preserve it.

It was such a nice day to be outside and take part of this important hike and promotion to save this naturally pristine environment. Great hike with fun and interesting folks, see ya all at the next one.

What a nice and interesting group of people. Great new space to go for an early spring hike - very pretty with just enough challenge to keep us honest. Special thanks go to John for thinking of sharing it - and working most all of the details. Great to hike with you all - looking forward to the next one.

We have a big, enthusiastic group for this outing - WOO Hoo! Please pay attention to the gear request - if you got 'em, use 'em! Please pay special attention to the carpooling issue/approach/ solution. John is willing to run the shuttle twixt and tween - take advantage of his expansive goodwill.

Do we need fluorescent orange for this hike.

    March 7, 2014

Ken - If it is a flattering color for you - go for it! However, it is a Land Trust exempted from hunting at the moment, I believe. Also - it is being led by organizations that probably have access to authorities that would draw much faster than the hunters,.. :) (Sorry - I specialize in ironic humor,..)

Mathieu - How cool that you already know the preserve. Extra folks that have played the trails are always a great asset.

I know the reserve like the back of my hand. Ask whatever

We are also being lead by someone that has a clue and we can ask questions of. Exciting!

Hi - here's the REALLY cool thing - and the unknown: this is a WHOLLY new area that is just being set up with trails. Woo Hoo! The point of the hike is to expose the community to the possibilities. There are marked trails, but how well marked, we don't know yet. There are still purchases and pending P&Z issues to keep the full land-trust intact. Follow the links given for a topographical map - it looks like there are inclines, some dramatic - but the actual trails are, as of yet, nebulous (or we don't know until we join this hike). Likely, no inclines above[masked]' in brief areas: challenging, but definitely do-able. They are leading open-forum family hikes, too - so there will likely be something for EVERYONE! I am very excited to find a wholly new space right here that may also preserve some of the spots that previously were on a chopping block. Yay!
