Bike Ride and Double Ferry Trip to Shelter Island

Okay - at long last - here are the details:

We will depart New London on the 9:00am ferry.  Ferry to Orient Point (sorry - we checked - there aren't discounts available unless you sign in blood and promise your first-born,..). Reservations recommended, just in case, so here is the link: https://www.longislandferry.com/default.aspx

Cost is $26.26 for passage R/T and $8 for the bike - R/T

We will bike from Orient Point to Greenport, enjoying the scenes (and smells) along the way.  Route: Orient Point to Greenport: 8.7 miles.  Then, we will bike to the North Shore Ferry ($5 round trip: link: http://www.northferry.com/ - **CASH only!** )

to Shelter Island: 2.8 miles.  Once on Shelter Island, there are a lot of great restaurants and we will find one to go for yummies and maybe a drink and refill of water bottles.  There is a simple loop (the whole island is only about 5 miles) - but it is quite scenic (with a large nature preserve) and we can stop for some pics as needed.  Here is a link to scenic bike rides: http://www.trails.com/tcatalog_trail.aspx?trailid=BGN018-026

Shelter Island ferry return to Greenport (perhaps some down/optional) time.  We MUST re-visit the lavender farm en-route and might chance upon a vineyard, too.  Then, back on the ferry at Orient Point (8.7 miles) to return to New London on the 6:00pm ferry.

Any that choose to can join for an apres-outing at a grill in New London (to be discussed on the ferry home,..)

Helmets are required for this trip.  Bring sunscreen and fluids and some cash (for Shelter Island ferry and any desired munchies/fluids on the ferries,..). Wear appropriate/wicking clothing and bring a topper for wind/weather on the ferry - it gets chilly.

If you need to rent a bike for yourself or someone else, I found a very nice vendor on our last (smaller) iteration of this trip:

http://greenportbikerental.com/  If his website is uncooperative, CALL the number.  He delivers to the Orient Point Launch site and his was a nice bike, nicely equipped.  We lucked out last time,..

Trip was a blast last time - should be even better this time!

NEW NOTE: There are plenty of loops on this route to satisfy all level of riders. Erin has suggested riding all the way to Sag Harbor. It is an option for some/all of us that can be decided by how we feel once on the road. Mileage and time can be determined at that time as well as meeting points and cell #'s if the group splits up. Everybody's comfort level will be considered and we will return together.

Co-hosted with Carolyn.

Rain date September 8.

Hi Erin, I just joined SECTA and am planning to join this ride tomorrow. It sounds great. A couple of questions though. The LI Ferry website made no comment about bikes -- are we leaving our cars in New London and bringing our bikes across to Orient Point? Should I just reserve a passenger ticket? Second, are you planning to do the basic loop on Shelter Island, and about how many miles is that? I saw one website that said there's a basic loop of 8 miles, but that there's also a 30-mile loop. I just wanted to have some idea of what mileage on SI the group planned to do. More than 8 is fine with me, but I'd want to have some idea ahead. Thank you!

Thanks for joining Teri. I'm also looking forward to an awesome ride tomorrow! Yes, no cars, just bikes. Buy a passenger plus bike round trip ticket for $34 for 9:00 ferry. Look for the group on the loading line. Although Carolyn has done an excellent job defining a route to loop SI, we are open to changes depending on the interests and stamina of the group. One special request has been to ride to Sag Harbor. All this can be decided once on the road and everybody has a vote. Depending on the individual, I would say that you could ride anywhere from 17 to 36 miles all-together depending on the loops you choose.

Is this ok for occasional biker, new to this group's events?

    September 2, 2013

    • Carolyn

Nancy - that is a great question! (you Brat/Awesome lady). This is not a ride for someone that doesn't regularly do something (anything!) very physical (bike-ride, hike, gym, etc.) - it is a challenging number of miles (even for me - the leader!, cough, cough) - but we DO have a large span of time and most of the miles are relatively flat. The vistas and the company are worth at least 10 more miles above my average, generally - yay! (And the sore butt that may accompany it) If you are reasonably fit, you may really want to come along (there are a few jumping off points for those that want fewer miles: miles between outings sections are listed). If the shortest distance of miles posted look likely to be a hardship - skip and we'll organize a different outing next year for you. If you have questions, and you have signed up for the outing, you will soon get my cell # for further questions).
