Sorry Liz, three of us were going to Denny's but as we were walking we saw TGI Friday's and it was closer.

No problem. I need to get more people's phone numbers. I'll do that at our next book discussion.

Who can remember the rest of what Dawkins said about having the gene for "x" and having the gene to like "x" in regards to the potential for it to grow exponentially in another direction?

      You're welcome.

Poetic and colorful. Fuzzy on theories.

    March 7, 2013

    • Sue

He didn't have enough time to go into depth on the theories - but I did get a bit lost as I've already mentioned. Perhaps my mind wasn't working quickly enough to grasp what he said.

      March 8, 2013

  • Jan R.

Chuck and I both missed what he said before saying "they are wrong and I am right". It was in a response to an audience question. Does anyone remember the question or what he was speaking of?

    March 8, 2013

    • Sue

I think it was evolutionists v. creationists

      March 8, 2013

  • Sue

Charlene, that's where I got a bit lost too.

I wish I could remember the wording because as he said it, I wondered if it could serve as a natural selection "explanation" for homosexuality

I enjoyed the lecture but sat in a diff section from the group. I tried to meet up with the group at Denny's but after 45 min. didn't see anyone and left.

The second portion was relevant in that it addressed the criticism of science that describes it as merely a reductionist endeavor. There is beauty in the form and function of the natural world, and an increased understanding of these adds to the esthetic rather than diminishing it. The transition was a bit awkward, but overall an interesting talk.

    1 · March 8, 2013

    • Clara

Thanks for the explanation as I wasn't too clear on relevancy to the first part. Overall I enjoyed the lecture.

Richard Dawkins presented different theories (Darwin v. Wallace) as to why females chose certain males over others using peacocks and birds of paradise as examples that I became a little lost but interested in finding out more. I liked the idea that a female mockingbird might become intoxicated by the singing of a male mockingbird and fascinated with his explanation of how birds learn to sing: either by comparing their notes against a "built-in template", or by making a "recording" of another male bird they hear and then comparing their attempts against that "recording."

Prof Dawkins' could have expanded his discussion of the Peacock's plummage to human intelligence. Each peacock chick has the gene for "colorful plummage" and the gene for liking "colorful plJablonkaummage" hereafter referred to as CP. I do not use "X" so as not to confuse anyone sex chromosome pairing. Now let's substitute for CP in the case of human babies, "HI" for high intelligence. If humans were to breed based on HI, would all humans in some future generations be atheists?
Quite appropriately, Prof. Dawkins apologized for failing to mention even one female evolutionary biologist such as award winning Eva Jablonka in the field of epigenetics, which explains women wearing spike high heels and enlarging their breasts with huge implants.

I checked to see about tickets. There are still some some available.
    On Facebook I posted:
I have 3 spare tickets: One for a devout female Moslem, one for an Orthodox female Jew, & one for a female devout Catholic. (No charge for tickets). Pick up your ticket from me at 6:30, outside the venue's entrance.
