Our member Melissa Zwilling has organized FIU's Chapter of the Secular Student Alliance.  Way to go Melissa!  They will be holding a debate with the school's Catholic group.

You may need to pay for parking, but they are planning on having some free sushi for those in attendance.  The topic is "Is belief in God reasonable?" There will also be some time for audience questions at the end.

Everyone of us noticed when the Catholic Panther's girl said there was "proof" that Jesus had come back from the dead. I actually followed up and asked what this proof was, but she said that what she REALLY stated was that he was the only person in history to come back from the dead... which is also clearly false even from the Catholic perspective (Lazarus.) We have a preliminary video (without editing) available on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEtFdQTehKA&feature=youtu.be (I can't stand to watch it because I hate seeing myself talk! LOL)

I'd say the only moment that got the room chatting was when one of the theist debaters in the middle of one of her rebuttals satated that jeseus was the only human in history to ever be proven to come back from the dead. She really said that and people laughed out loud but only for a split seconds.

Oh yes, it was very civilized, from both parts, I loved that "our" panelists were so relaxed, smiling and with a great attitude all the time!

Hi, I was wondering if the event got confrontational at any point. I work at FIU in Student Government and wanted to attend, but was not able to because of a previous engagement. Just wanted to know if they met in a civilized way.

Wish we could have had a waypoint to meet before the event. I was next in line to question the theist side but they ended the Qs. I almost fell asleep during the theist opening statement. The girl just read from a paper and was so monotoned.

Melissa, thanks for putting this together and inviting the group. The debate was interesting and kept concise. I know the Q&A was out of anyone's control, but questions were not always on topic. At what time did the event end?

I liked to see the new generations awakening to reason and using their brains to think. "Our" 3 panelists :) were great, they showed they know what they are talking about, the Catholic Panthers on the other side had very weak arguments, as we could expect, and they only had 1 guy answering the questions. I felt pity with the catholic girl when she said that there is proof that Jesus Christ has resucitated and almost the whole audience laughed. Poor thing! :)

Though I did not get to meet or mix and mingle with the group this time, the debate was a great intro to non theistic ideas.

@Gabriela, yes, we posted 7:45PM as the "Miami time" for the event. The actual debate will not start until 8PM. :) And @Natasha, we do indeed have plans to video record the debate and post it online! :)

Please note that on the event's Facebook page the time listed is 7:45, not 8pm.

I want to attend, but I teach a college class. Maybe someone can video record it and post it on Utube. Looking forward to attend the next debate!
