BOOKCLUB - From Dictatorship to Democracy

Angel will be hosting this event!  Come out and join us!  Please remember that even if you didn't finish the book or have a chance to get around to it, you are always welcome for some good conversation and even better company!

From Dictatorship to Democracy was a pamphlet, printed and distributed by Dr Gene Sharp and based on his study, over a period of forty years, on non-violent methods of demonstration. Now in its fourth edition, it was originally handed out by the Albert Einstein Institution, and although never actively promoted, to date it has been translated into thirty-one languages. This astonishing book travelled as a photocopied pamphlet from Burma to Indonesia, Serbia and most recently Egypt, Tunisia and Syria, with dissent in China also reported. Surreptitiously handed out amongst youth uprisings the world over - how the 'how-to' guide came about and its role in the recent Arab uprisings is an extraordinary tale. Once read you'll find yourself urging others to read it and indeed want to gift it.

Thanks Ariel. So glad to know that you don't endorse what this group is doing. I'll admit that I didn't look past their opening page so I didn't see as much as you did. Perhaps we can discuss tomorrow why we think their use of non-violent strategies to protest will or will not work--in the context of Dr. Sharpe's book. See you then.

Hey Ariel, I am very surprised that you would cite this group as an example of what is discussed in "From Dictatorship to Democracy." It appears to me to be purely a right wing political group unhappy--as they all are--with the current administration in Washington. They are hardly what I would call a liberation movement as Professor Sharp is discussing. Besides, we already live in a democracy. The fact that Col Reid continually calls for "prayer" for this group should make one immediately suspicious. The fact that he cite "principles of a West, Cruz, Dr. Ben Carson, Lee, DeMint, Paul, Gov Walker, Sessions, Gowdy, Jordan," is also a clue as to the agenda of this group. I don't know who most of these people are, but if Cruz refers to Ted Cruz from Texas, then the whole mission of this group is suspect. Ted Cruz is a certifiably evil man, Machiavellian in his desire for power and the use of any means to get it, including lying and character assassination

Since we live in a democracy though I find it interesting to see how these strategies will work. Although, I think their expected amount of support(10-million) is unlikely to happen. This group seems to be composed of various militias from around the United States and they have been planning this for atleast a few months now. I do not beleieve they will be successful at all, but it is a real life example of non violent struggle nonetheless, dictatorship or not.

They are using many of the nonviolent strategies being discussed in the book. The main Operation was set to start last night. There are many links all over the internet discussing communication strategies and blocking off of roads leading to DC. This will be an interesting thing to keep track of.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
