Building NLP Semantic Web Applications for Financial Services

Financial Services is far more than just about the numbers. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and the Semantic Web play an increasingly important role in finding, understanding and reporting on adverse events, untangling complicated prospectus documents, and deciphering required SEC filings. This session will highlight the power of developing Semantic Web NLP applications using COGITO – the development environment from Expert System and the resulting applications in financial services from Recognos Financial – a New York based Semantic Technologies firm serving the financial capital of the world.

We have scheduled this event as part of Internet Week NY 2010

The session is limited to 25 seats. Any additional seats will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis if we are in a position to make them available.

Great intro to semantic technologies in the financial services domain. Keep them coming! The session started off with a general NLP and Semantic Web introduction with Brooke. In the second part Drew went straight into financial services. This was a very attractive overview with a deep dive into XBRL and SEC reporting regulations. The event started at 6pm with introductions at 6.15pm. The first presentation with Brooke started at 6.45pm and second with Drew at around 7.25pm and he finished at around 8.15pm. We closed the event at around 8.45pm and went to the bar downstairs.

The presentation by the Expert Systems, SpA, Rep provided a very good view of the manner in which natural language processing, can facilitate a rapid and complete organization and classification of information existent in text form. The presentation by the Recognos Financial Rep, provided an intricate insight involving the manner in which they are employing SW technologies, (esp. Expert Systems Cogito), as a data centric approach and platform, to provide solutions for financial industry participants; particularly regarding Banking Systems w/EDGAR data. The Meetup was very interesting.

This was an inside look at business analytics for the financial industry. Excellent presentations.

Excellent new point of departure for SW presentations; industry verticals. It's in these contexts that discussions become concrete and focused.

Fantastic. Really exciting showing of practical advances in a previously "science experiments" grade technology. I look forward to learning more.

Very informative, especially Drew's insights on why semantic approaches are hard to sell to financial firms.

As Marco said, its most appropriate that Semantics is starting to get traction in Financial Services in the the undisputed(?) financial capital of the world - NYC. Its kinda sobering though that Drew validated what I feared - that "Semantics" still has a tough row to hoe in terms of Executive mindshare. Hopefully, "solutions" like those demonstrated by Drew & Warren (that can only be done with Semantics) turn on the "lightbulb" and spark the next CIO meme - starting the long overdue "Semantic" renaissance.

Great first experience with the group. Wish I could have stayed longer to socialize. I'd love to see more practical implementations of semantics.
