[Study Group] Stanford Natural Language Processing Class

Online (map)

Selected By: Marco Neumann

Hello Fellow NLP Study Group!

You may have received an update email from Dan Jurafsky and Christopher Manning or seen Marco's note about it.  Either way we're delayed a little, which is fine.  Also, some have suggested a google+ hangout.  So let's take this time to explore that idea and get the technical hiccups out of the way and perhaps decide if that's a good idea for this study group's environment.  It certainly would make things transportation easy!  So I scheduled a regular public hangout with http://gphangouts.com/ for every Monday at 6pm.  You can see the schedule and get the instructions to join the hangout here.

I look forward to meeting you virtually.

Please send your agenda ideas in the meantime here's a rough agenda for the meeting :

Agenda

  1. Introductions and state goal for the semester.
  2. Discuss Group Goals for the semester.
  3. Create expectations, rules and guidelines
  4. Review Course Description and prerequisites found here - http://www.nlp-class.org/
  5. Set Agenda for the next Study Group.

Cheers,

- Todd

PS - Has anyone bought the recommended textbook yet?  $104 on Amazon!

---------------

NOTE: Apologies for changing the time, I promise to return the Thursday schedule, I just thought that it would be better have an organizational first meeting after the course is open to all of us and to make sure everyone attending is on the same page.  After we get through the logistics and organization, I'd like to discuss individual and group goals for the study group.

------

This is a study group meeting and not a regular meetup event with a presentation etc. In the first event the group will discuss the online schedule and the curriculum for the Stanford Natural Language Processing Class as part of the local study group in New York. Please indicate if you plan to attend the study group to allow the host to plan accordingly.

If you would like to enroll in the Natural Language Processing Online Class with Chris Manning and Dan Jurafsky please visit and register on the Stanford University site here:

"Unfortunately, we've just learned that the launch of the NLP class (and all our other online courses here) has been delayed for reasons beyond our control. We aren't sure how long the delay will be - the range is from a few days to a week or possibly several weeks. We'll let you know a firm date as soon as we possibly can."

I think we will have to change our schedule as well to make sure we are in sync with the course. Todd will post a message later today.

I changed the meetup a bit. It's not as f2f as I expected, but it might work well with the google+ public hangout; we'll see!

Hi Volkan, Yes, we're shooting for Monday to try to do a google+ hangout. Having never done an online study group, I thought it would help clear the hiccups and we can discuss some of the logistics of the study group. I've updated the meetup description with instructions and an agenda.

By having a public hangout published on gphangouts.com, won't anybody on the internet be able to wander in? Maybe a better alternative would be to create a named hangout and publish on the lotico-list.

I could swear this was at 6:30. So I missed it. Also....I am trying to connect right now at 6:38 but the page is timing out. Is it over already?

Oh man. Just caught the last few seconds. Hopefully next time I will be more punctual. Btw, since we're doing this online anyway, why don't we do it at a more convenient time, like around 8PM, or maybe on weekends? Any thoughts?
