Internet-of-Things, Arduino and talks

  • May 21, 2014 · 5:00 PM
  • Glimworm HQ

We talk and do Internet-of-Things, Arduino, RaspPi and more. Ranging from projects (Air Quality Egg, Open Thermostat), presentations, events and just getting together to talk. Everybody is welcome: Technical, non-technical or just interested.

After the hugely successful and fun Air Quality Egg project, we are working this year on a new project: The Open Thermostat project. Goal is to design a home thermostat that has loads of possibilities for customization, you can program your self and is based on the Arduino electronics platform.

If you like to know more, be involved or are just curious: Just come to one of our meetups... every third Wednesday of the Month at Glimworm's HQ in Amsterdam (across the road from the Rijksmuseum, thanks Jonathan!).

In addition, we want to bring in speakers for each event, who can share their thoughts, experiences and/or wisdom. So if you know someone, let us know.

Rough Agenda:

17:00 - chat , social , work on projects together

18:30 - food

19:00 - Update on Smart citizen Kit

19:15  - Chat about projects we can do together

It was a very inspiring meeting!

I particularly liked the idea of using Bluetooth Low Energy as platform for the Internet of Things. This is a route that should definitely be explored further. Why use Zigbee (or Z-wave, or... etc.) while none of these technologies are embedded in the hardware we use all the time (smartphones, tablets, laptops)?
Why can't we just use Bluetooth instead?

meanwhile Apple already did it with Bluetooth LE, but it is a proprietary standard. perhaps an opensource one is coming...

Saturday the 31st of May, during the Amsterdam Maker Festival Ground3d and Wevolver are hosting the Open Tech Expo. The call for makers is still open, and we would love to have somebody showing a Raspberry Pi project..

For all who attended the meetup: If you would like to join one of the projects, email me at [masked]
I’ll send you a beta-code to register, and connect you to your project.

Hi Bram, you missed one project that was connected to the Sleep cycle/health project. It is the home automation project.

At the Visserijmuseum Zoutkamp we're working on a temperature/air humidity logger (http://friesewoudloper.wordpress.com/2013/04/01/klimaatmonitoringsysteem-met-arduino/). Our aim is to keep the costs as low as possible and publish the measurements as open data. We've made our first prototype using Arduino Yun and Plotly. I'm really interested in the Open Thermostat project. We encountered a few problems we were not able to fix, due to our lack of programming experience. I'm gonna do my best to attend the meetup on wednesday.

Hi all, anyone of this meetup going to Waag's Smart Citizen Kit Café tomorrow? (Tuesday May 13)

    May 12, 2014

    • Sander van K.

      Yes, planning to do so.

It was an interesting meeting and the basic question that wasn't asked before was what are the 'normal' values both in the Netherlands and in Europe and what is the reach of the sensor. It became evident that these aren't aligned.

    Hi guys,
At the March meetup we gathered all projects people are either working on or that they want to start.
Unfortunately the whiteboard was wiped before they could be jotted down..

If anyone has a picture of the whiteboard please share!

No pictures, but... out the top of my mind:

      1) Remotely accessible radiator thermostat (it was discussed that it might be combined with the 2nd)
      2) Research on human behavior / sleep pattern in relationship to a room with controlled temperature (Adrienne)
      3) Build an electric car (JC)
      4) Measuring sound continuously using arduino / smart citizen kit (Me)
      5) Building a mesh network and connect to the freedombox project (Thomas Lake)
      6) Finalize the car registration kit that can be used by the SnapCarr's of this world (Johan Henselmans)

Ah a pitty but I won't be able to make it this time. Maybe we can set up a webstream for the presentation/talks? Would be interesting considering the topics JC mentioned.
