Tools, Tips, and Tricks We’re Thankful For

It's time to step back, to evaluate life, and to say "Thanks." At this Meetup our speakers will focus on the online marketing tools that they are most thankful for. Presentations will include the:

  • Name of the tool,
  • Functions and features, and
  • How you can use the tool in your everyday online marketing efforts.

While the focus will be on FREE tools, our speakers will also highlight a paid tool that they would recommend.

Confirmed Speakers:

Melanie Phung, Director of New Media at PBS.

Melanie works with producers, copywriters and developers to generate increased visibility for the depth and breadth of PBS’s online content. She believes great SEO strategy helps to bridge the divide between content, technology and user experience.


In addition to her SEO and content strategy focus, Melanie also has experience in online reputation management and social media marketing. She launched and managed the day-to-day social media strategy for the international aid organization CARE. During the humanitarian crisis following Haiti’s earthquake, CARE’s use of Twitter and Facebook was widely applauded as a great example of using social media to communicate about disaster relief. Prior to that, she worked on enterprise-level SEO strategy, launching and directing the highly profitable SEO program for the B2C e-commerce site Wirefly.com.

Melanie will present three mini case studies highlighting how she is thankful for cheap tools that make her day-to-day work easier. She will demonstrating how she uses:

  • UserTesting.com, to gain insights into search engine users' motivations and frustrations
  • CrazyEgg, to see what content users are (and are NOT) engaging with
  • ScreamingFrog (plus Excel), to automate the grunt work of content/SEO inventories

Robert Gazzola, Founder Gazz Consulting

A native Washingtonian, Rob founded Gazz Consulting in 2003, which has focused on custom web design and 'Local' SEO & Internet marketing for small business clients.Over 10 years we've developed a strong successful presence in the dental industry (as it helps being married to a dentist), with focus also on other small business media, legal and financial verticals. Rob has been a member of the SEO Meetup for over 4 years, and would not be exaggerating to say what I've learned and taken from these sessions has helped me in no small way to take my business to the next level, and am glad to have an opportunity to give back and help others.

Jim Reynolds is a season sales executive with over 10 years of sales experience in cutting edge technologies. Jim currently is the Strategic Account Executive for Brandwatch (www.brandwatch.com) a leading global provider in the social analytics market. As part of his role Jim oversee's all agency engagements for North America and focuses on managing direct relationships with the big 4 agency holding groups.


Previously Jim worked for Emerge Partners a CRM & Experiencial marketer based in NYC. They focused on Spirits marketing and clients included Pernod Ricard & Beam Global. Jim’s role was to create and define social practices across the agency including listening, engagement and platform deployment for customer. Previous to Emerge Jim was the first sales executive for Techrigy and continued on through the Alterian acquisition. His client base included such brands as Microsoft, Google, Dell, NASA, Warner Brothers & Mars Global he also managed key agency relation as well including Ketchum, Annalect, Ogilvy, Edelman, Universal McCann and others.

Jim will talk about what social media listening is, how it impacts search rankings and online reputation management. He will outline a variety of free tools that you can use to conduct social media listening and will highlight tools that integrate SEO metrics into influence ratings. He will also cover how you can use social media data proactively to improve your search rankings and online brand presence.
