Theme Meetup: try something new

As the schools start again after the summer holiday, let's be inspired by the students starting new courses and have a meeting themed for learning or trying a new craft or technique. It's easy to stick with what we know and feel confident in but trying a new craft could be the start of a new hobby and you may find the new technique can be combined well with others you already know. You may like to bring along some books, magazines or ideas you've found to help or better still an item that you have made or are currently making. All crafts are welcome. There are plenty of ideas online for stitchers of all types and other crafters too.

Let's have a nice evening chatting about our favourite crafts, being inspired by each other's completed projects (so don't forget to bring anything you have been making recently to show us!) and working on any portable projects you're able to do during the evening or asking questions you would like to see if anyone else can help with. If you want to work on something unrelated to the "Try Something New" theme, that's also fine. If you are trying something new, or have suggestions for crafts other people might like to try, do post a comment to let us know.

This Meetup is in the Royal Festival Hall. I've met here a few times with the group and it has been quite a popular location, so I hope to see plenty of you and your bags for a nice evening there. It is never possible to guarantee exactly where we can sit but I usually aim to sit somewhere near the river side of the hall, so try looking there first when you arrive.

Although the meetup is scheduled to start at six to suit any members who finish work early, it's fine to turn up whenever you wish. I work until 6 so I probably won't be there from the start but other members do arrive earlier. If you get there early, perhaps put something crafty on the table so other members can recognise you or you could even print out a table top sign to make it easy to spot you! If you are new and worried you'll not spot the group or feeling a bit uncertain about coming, just send me an email and I'll answer any questions or make sure someone looks out for you.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

I may be able to come along. My new craft is button making as the local embroiderers group has this as their latest project. I have researched dorset and yorkshire buttons and will have a go.

Hey! Looking forward to meeting everyone. First time to one of these meet ups, what do I need to look out for?! Thanks,

    1 · September 16, 2014

    • Joanne

Just look out for a group with craft stuff on the tables or look at some of the members' photos so you'll recognise us.

I only signed up last month and I have no previous experience in sewing apart from amending holes, fix buttons and shortening trousers. What do I need to Bring along with me for the first time? Is there any other beginner in the group?

    1 · September 15, 2014

    • cedar

Thanks so much for the encouragement. I will only bring along a few pieces of clothing which have holes on them to begin with. Looking forward to meet other more experienced people.

      September 15, 2014

    • Joanne

Good idea! It's nice to bring those kind of things to the group as they don't take as much concentration as a more complex project and they are often more portable too.

Hi Joanne. Sorry won't make tomorrow meet up. Will probably see you there though as going to knaughty knitters with a friend.

Thanks for letting us know, Jenny

OK I was researching knitting shops in Chicago where I am going next week and came across quite a few. One of which offers this service - "Speed Up Your Sock Knitting
Exciting new service at Loopy Yarns: Sock Tubes! Drop off a skein of sock yarn and, three days later, it will be ready to pick up in a form we lovingly refer to as a Sock Tube. A sock tube constitutes the most time consuming step of sock knitting - namely the leg and foot. We transition the yarn to a tube, you add a heel, toe and cuff and YOU'VE GOT A SOCK! There is a nominal fee for this process ($10 if sock yarn is purchased at Loopy; $20 for all other sock yarn)"

What I want to know is WHY?

    1 · September 8, 2014

    • Joanne

Can't think why but it must be making them money. Maybe you should find out what they do and bring the business idea over here. You could make your fortune!

Is it just me or has anyone else received this and several other recent posts from meetup seemingly hundreds of times.

    August 28, 2014

    • Joanne

Hi Betty, I haven't had that problem. Maybe let them know this. I think there is an email address on the site somewhere for problems and questions
