The Drafthouse: sloper kickoff

I have opened this session up for more participants; we'll likely be standing room only! :) That will work fine because this will be a discussion-based session rather than a working session. Come one, come all!

----------------------

Now that we have our measurements,* what next? As you may know, there are about as many different possible ways to draft slopers as there are models of sewing machines. Some of us have books or other resources on the subject, some of us don't know what I'm talking about! :) Wherever you are on this spectrum, join us for this meeting as we discuss our next steps. If you do have sloper/block drafting resources that you're willing to share, bring them all. (Remember to put your name on your stuff!) Our plan for this meeting is roughly as follows:

  • discuss different sloper drafting styles/methods
  • decide our next steps -- not everyone will go in the same direction, but we want to come up with a general plan
  • form smaller-segment groups, as desired -- for instance, if 2 or 3 people want to use the same drafting technique, they can exchange contact info to touch base with each other as questions arise. if you want to work by yourself, that's fine too!

*If you weren't able to attend when we buddied up and took measurements last year, but you want to get assistance with this, please let Susan or Susan know. Depending on how many we have, we may set up another small gathering, or we may be able to do it within another meeting, like the sewing party for instance.

Don't know what The Drafthouse is? Here's a post where we outlined the general direction of this series of meetings. You can jump in at any time!

This is what I'm bringing: The Threads article from 1/13 about drafting a bodice sloper; M. Rohr's book from the 1950's from which the Threads article was derived; K. Armstrong's book (2nd ed.) about general pattern drafting, including basic slopers; a book by Donald McGuinn on drafting basic pattern and another one on pattern drafting the name of the author of which escapes me at the moment. I'm wearing black to be measured in (and you will laugh when you see what it is) and white chalk to mark on the "costume" with and I'm bringing a few pins, a measuring tape, a clear ruler, and a piece of 1" and a piece of 1/4" elastic and a piece of string 4 feet, plus or minus, long.

    Anything else needed?

I am distressed that I didn't receive notice about this class! I've been struggling to develop a bodice sloper for about six weeks, with little success. Please put me on the wait list! B. Gibbs
