Hi everyone -- the lovely Karel Riley suggested this meetup and we are so thrilled to have her leading the discovery! Karel has written a wonderful description of the afternoon, so please read carefully and sign up if this exploratory meetup rings your bell: In this meetup, we will experiment with bleaching black fabrics using household bleach to get interesting effects. Different black fabrics will bleach to various underlying colors like brown, rust, green, purple - it's always a surprise. Using various natural items as 'masks', such as twigs or leaves, or other objects such as pieces of cardboard, chains, rope, or anything else that will create an interesting pattern, we will apply the bleach. We will use spray bottles to spray over the masks. We can try writing or drizzling on the fabric with laundry bleach pens. We can use a bleach thickener so we can paint the bleach in patterns. A 'bleach stop' will be used to prevent further bleaching, and we'll rinse out the fabrics when we are finished. The group leader has never tried these techniques, so we will all be learning together. Most of the materials needed will be provided. Each person should bring: * enough black fabric or clothing to work with, * plastic bags to put your wet fabric in, and * any items for masking you want to use, or any other items you want to experiment with. The $15 per person fee covers supplies and a $5 donation to the community center for the use of the building. Note that we are cutting off RSVP's about a week or two ahead of time so we know exactly how many supplies we need to purchase and allow for shipping time. The meetup will be held outside in a large, shaded back yard of a community center located at 5604 Manor Road in east Austin. We will have several large plastic tables to spread our fabric on. If it rains, we'll have to wait inside the building, but we will not be able to do the bleaching in the building. We are scheduled for Noon until 4:00.
