When this fashion sewing Meetup group was started by First Samples a few years it was a way to help Austin seamsters meet each other outside of a formal classroom or paid type situation. Since First Samples has closed though, it has been difficult to figure out a way to make sewing Meetups successful without a stable place to meet in. Sewing isn?t like knitting or crocheting. You can?t just show up with a basket of yarn and some wooden dowels and start a project. Sewing requires electricity, stable horizontal surfaces to cut and sew on, cutting tools, fitting tools, sewing tools, good lighting, space, etc. Unlike a wine tasting Meetup, we can?t just join together in a bar, or a jogging Meetup that can meet on a street corner, we need a climate controlled, element protected place to meet in. There have been many of you who have offered your homes to meet in, but honestly, not all Meetup members are like you would think. Anyone can join a Meetup group and just because someone is interested in sewing doesn?t make them a trustworthy or healthy person.
After getting together with a few of my favorite Meetup members to try and brainstorm a way to make this work (thank you Susan and Lou for putting in so much time driving around town and interviewing potential locations: Libraries, town meeting spots, large coffee shops, etc.) the conclusion is that there isn?t a place that will fit into our budget that is available for regular scheduling. So, as of July 31, 2009 the Sewing with Style Meetup group will be closed. I highly encourage you to use the Sewing with Style Meetup discussions board to create your own local social sewing circles in your areas of town. The permissions to send and receive email will be moved to their highest level to make it easy for you. Those of you who don't wish to receive any more emails can easily opt out or leave the group.
Thank you all for so much fun these last few years. I wish you all the best of luck with what ever you are up to.
Keep on sewing!
