Re: [sewing-178] Our First Meetup: Silkscreening?

ThermoFax is a really good technique as well I have a couple friends that have them.  I'm sure one of them would let us use theirs for a fee. I'll post pics of my screen and the print I made if anyone is interested. I as well will be doing Maker Fair and I can probably answer any questions about that or I know who to go to to get answers.

Fabric stenciling can be cool if you make your own stencils!  I just read about a stenciling technique in Craft Magazine (we have it at the studio) where you use Freezer paper and iron the stencil on to your fabric.  I tried it out and it works alright....the only problem is that there is a little bleeding at the edges, so you can't really do super detailed images.
The article lists other internet resources and forums for stenciling...I bet there are some awesome techniques out there.

Hi Molly,

Thanks so much for letting us know.  I hope we will get something put together in the next 30 days, but so far no one has stepped forward as an experienced home silkscreener... it's also worth noting that the photo emulsion method of silkscreening is probably more time-intensive than we want for a first meetup, so... what would you think about fabric stenciling?  My first reaction was that it sounded really hokey, but when I saw the results and felt the quality, I was pretty convinced that this might work for a Meetup!

Take care and hope to hear from you soon.

P.S.  Are you attending the Maker Faire on Oct 20-21?

a fee for supplies sounds great - whichever.

Hi everyone!

I'm excited about helping to organize one of these Meetups. The First Samples studio has taken over some office space that has a workroom with a sink, and an outdoor area that is enclosed on three sides... In other words, we can get a little messy with our first Meetup.

So Shauna and I wondered if any of you have good experience with silkscreening, and would like to lead a First Samples Meetup?

I have read a couple of online tutorials and it seems really cool and pretty straightforward, but I am guessing that the results get better each time you try it. So if we can wrangle a relatively experienced silkscreener to lead us, we can have a super productive and fun day!

We could actually offer this Meetup as a free event for those who just want to watch and learn, but ask for a fee to cover cost of supplies for those who want to actually silkscreen.

What do you think?

Thanks, everyone --
Antoinette
