Prolific Hong Kong action director Dante Lam (The Beast Stalker, Unbeatable) returns with a dark, psychological action crime-thriller that pits regular collaborator Nick Cheung (The Beast Stalker, The Stool Pigeon) against Daniel Wu (Overheard) in a bleak, horrifying psychological and physical battle filled with strong imagery of Chinese supernatural horror. It’s like Infernal Affairs fused with Jacob’s Ladder or Angel Heart.

Official Selection of 2014 Berlin International Film Festival.

We're watching this film the same day it opens in Hong Kong theaters.

Synopsis:  After a cop unknowingly revived a fatally injured robber by donating his blood, only for the robber to return and terrorize the public, the cop vows to bring down the robber and his gang while coping with his guilt and fragile psychological state.

“Action auteur Dante Lam delivers his darkest work to date with this ghoulish supernatural thriller” - Maggie Lee, Variety

“That Demon Within boasts an inexhaustible visual energy … an introspective thriller that blends kinetic action with Taoist superstition” - Fionnuala Halligan, Screen Daily

“A cagey mixture of action and horror, with a standout performance from Daniel Wu” - Deborah Young, The Hollywood Reporter

In the last few years, Dante Lam has proven himself capable of solid crime thrillers that seamlessly mix energetic actions and strong emotions. His latest crime film is his darkest work yet that pits a mentally unstable cop against a group of merciless robbers. However, like its protagonist, the film suffers from schizophrenia: sometimes it’s a dark psychodrama about the cop’s psyche, at times it’s a cat and mouse game between cop and robbers, and there’s a late attempt at social commentary and strong emotional payoff that usually appears at Lam’s previous crime films; but they're let down by the choppy editing. The film marketing sells the chinese horror imagery, but in the film they only show up when it’s convenient and only add darkness superficially. It’s an interesting effort that doesn’t work as well as the director probably hoped for. Still, it’s good to see Dante Lam trying something different and not playing it safe like another crime thriller with Nick Cheung and Nic Tse.
