Jeremy Zawodny talks MySQL performance, tuning, tips & tricks

When all you have is MySQL, everything looks like a table.

Jeremy Zawodny will talk about Craigslist's current use of MySQL, where it's painful, and how things are being re-architected to make the pains go away. This includes hardware changes, sphinx, redis, memcached, and some custom Perl work.

Jeremy's Bio can be found here (though it's outdated).

Jeremy was coherent, precise and insightful. Got a few ideas from the meetup on things I want to try and a couple of things I need to explore to see if its appropriate for our workplace.

Surprised at how such a big site can have reporting off the live schema. Lesser mortals would have probably run into a performance barrier they could not cross years ago and then HAD to Create the Reporting DB. It also speaks to a pretty risk tolerant and probably close knit work environment. The dedicated query nodes in their clusters is an interesting way to address some of the risk.

I enjoyed it quite a bit and picked up some very useful information. I was also quite interesting to see some of how the Craigslist "Sausage is made"

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
