Cloud Computing in PHP with the Amazon Web Services

You will learn how to use the Amazon Web Services (AWS) including the Elastic Compute Cloud, the Simple Storage Service, and the Simple Database Service to create a scalable application in PHP using the new AWS SDK for PHP. You will see how easy and fun it is to build and run an application in the cloud. Bio: Jeff Barr, Senior Web Services Evangelist for Amazon Web Services, is focused on furthering awareness among software developers of the opportunity to innovate and build businesses using Amazon Web Services. In this role, Jeff travels, speaks, blogs, and conducts virtual events. Jeff is the author of Host Your Website in the Cloud, published by SitePoint in September 2010.

Suggest more hard code meetups like this...more code, more demos, less catering to the newbies (they'll follow along and learn more by being introduced to tougher concepts).

Like the Newrelic.com demo as well.

Excellent. New Relic provided Pizza before the meeting. Two informative presenters at the meeting: (1)Brian Doll from New Relic and (2)Jeff Barr from Amazon Web Services. New Relic provides application performance management for Rails, PHP, Java and .Net. Jeff Barr's presentation provided a lot of code. New Relic paid for the book about Amazon Web services distributed after the meeting. The PHP Meetup home page hosts a video of the meeting. Another video of Brian Doll about New Relic's RPM is here: http://vodpod.com/watch/5177484....

@Everyone, please move the conversation about the technology (pros & cons) to the mail list. Thanks.

When we used AWS as a cloud provider, we experienced a failure of 71% of our instances over a 3 month period. This caused us to move to a more enterprise level provider(Rackspace Cloud). Since our switch, we have experienced only 1 of our 108 instances failing total in the 4 months since we switched.

@Jesse: Please don't make generic statements bashing on AWS without data/reasoning behind it. Jeff has been very helpful to me in the past and AWS is a recognized leader in cloud related technologies.

That's a bit of an over-statement, it really depends on what kind of application you are thinking of.

Amazon AWS is such a bad choice of cloud provider

@Junaid/@Chen, we are expecting a full house for this event. If the room fills up and you are not on the Yes list, you may not be able to get in.

@everyone, if you can't make it, please be sure to change your RSVP so that those people on the waiting list can get in.

The live stream of the event will be at: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/s...

Usually even if they are full, if you get there, you have to wait 5 to 10 mins and they will let you in. So its better to get there. It happened to me. I didnt even registered online and just showed up and they let me in :), so chill

I really want to make this meetup. In general, how many people reserve, but don't end up showing up? Would it be worth it to go on the day of if I'm 23 on the WL or would it not be worth my time?

    Thanks!
