Sugarloaf is another great Sonoma County Park loaded w/ views. And I mean VIEWS!
This will be a 6 & 1/2 mile hike, w/ an altitude gain of roughly 1600'.
This is a moderate to strenuous hike (depending on your condition).
On past hikes here, newbies said it was great, so don't be intimidated by the gain - it's not that steep, and oh are the views worth it! We'll be taking the west approach which will give us a vino/snack break in the shade.
If the grp wants we'll go to Mary's (like last time) for pizza and/or pasta.
We'll have our typical vino/snack break along the trail to Bald Mountain, then we'll have lunch on the summit - the views from the top are amazing! There's nothing like sharing a meal and vino at the top of a beautiful mountain!
Per an online review: Sugarloaf offers beautiful trails into the hills. My favorite is the Ridge Trail, it's an uphill challenge but well worth it when you get to the point where you can overlook Rutherford, St. Helena and Oakville, then turn around to see the hills beyond Santa Rosa
We'll hit the trail and weave our way up to Bald Mountain. As always there will be a vino/snack break, and later we'll have lunch on the summit. There are interpretive signs on the summit to help ID the surrounding landmarks, which include: Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, the steep hillsides of Jack London State Park, and the hillsides of Annadel State Park, Mt Wittenberg - the highest peak on Point Reyes (33 miles west); Snow Mountain (65 miles north); Mount Diablo (51 miles southeast); Mount Tamalpais (37 miles southwest); and the Golden Gate Bridge (44 miles southwest).
From Highway 101 in Santa Rosa, exit on Highway 12 East (toward Sonoma). After 2 mi the hwy will end at a signal, where you'll turn Left onto Framers Ln. Go 1 mi on Farmers Ln and turn Right onto Sonoma Hwy (12 East).
Follow Hwy 12E 8.5 mi and turn Left onto Adobe Canyon Rd by Landmark Winery, and park there. See below.
PLEASE NOTE: Meet at 10:30 at Hwy 12 & Adobe Canyon Rd (Vineyards Inn restaurant is there). We'll carpool/ caravan up into the park from there. If you're not there on time, you'll miss us.
