Come out for a starlight sail and learn night navigation and sailing. Saturday July 2nd.
PS: (you don't have to participate you can just ride along for the fun of it and see the night sky and city lights!)
This is a special educational cruise that will include a handout coving some of the more interesting and commonly used navigation techniques and terminology, AND a chance to practice some useful navigation skills !! Sounds good! Yes?
No previous navigation experience necessary !
Our goal is fun, but if you learn something along the way that will be great :)
True and magnetic north, heading vs bearing, latitude Longitude, chart reading, channel markers, range markers, using GPS, radio operation, and some practical experience with celestial navigation.
We will cross check position and course using visual sights with GPS.
We will rotate so everyone gets a chance at all duties that will include, helm, deck watch, sail trim, log recorder, radio log, navigator and skipper.
We shove off at 6:30 to get a couple of hours of sailing in and then return just after the stars come out 9:40 pm, so we can get a chance to see the night sky over the north bay... very spectacular for sure.
Saturn, Regulus, Dubhe, Polaris, Vega, Spica, Arcturus, and Cygnus. Constellation include the Northern Cross, Big Dipper, Leo, and Virgo.
We will keep a sharp eye for satellites as well.
Space is limited to 6.
It should be a warm evening, but bring extra layers just in case, the evenings can get chilly out on the water.
