Evening/Moon/Night hike at Lake Chabot

  • Sep 30, 2012 · 4:00 PM

Hi all,
Sorry for the laaaate notice...
Since it's supposed to be a very warm Sunday, I thought I'd do another full moon hike  disguised as an evening hike, so I don't sound too crazy ;)
If you can't go tonight on the full moon hike at Marin headlands, here's another chance for some fun...
This will be about 9 mile mostly easy hike around the lake to get some exercise, enjoy the full moon and have dinner/wine on the lake shore.

The hike to the dinner spot is about 6.2 miles and from there back to the parking lot is about 2.8 miles.

If you want to join us but don't want to do the whole 9 miles, you can take the 2.8 mile 'West shore trail' and join us at the dinner spot [which is the bass cove marked on the map, we should get to the dinner spot probably by around 6:30 or so].
Then take the same route back with everyone else.

We can meet near the park entrance station at road which goes inside to the Lake Chabot Marina at 4:00pm and start hiking at 4:15pm

You can park on the side of the lake chabot road and walk to the entrance station. Make sure you don't leave any valuables in sight in the car. Or you can pay and park inside the park parking lot.

We can hike about 6.2 miles to the bass cove. It has a pit toilet as well as a garbage can.

Moonrise is at 7:01pm, but will take a bit for it to come up the hills above the lake.
We'll hangout at a spot next to the water for a while to have dinner and enjoy the lake.
[You are welcome to cut the dinner short and head back if you have to be back early, but make sure you have a map and know the way :)]

Also, this time, the surface is dirt [grassy]. So bring tarp or blanket to sit on. I'll bring a big tarp to keep all the food in the middle. Will bring a lantern also. Bring a lantern if you have one.

Dinner spot:

Please try to bring dinner/snacks/wine to share :) Remember, food is the best way to make new friends ;)
Try to bring cup for wine if you have.
[And another good thing is you may be burning more calories carrying all your goodies and wine over the 6.2 miles ;)]

Then may be start hiking back around 9:15 or so. We should have moon lighting the path on the way back. We should be back at the parking lot by about 10+pm or so, unless we are having too much fun :) [park has a curfew from 10pm].

From Highway 880 south, take 238 east. Exit at 'Castro valley blvd.'
Make a left on castro valley blvd. After less than a mile, make a left on Lake chabot road. After about 1.7 miles, you will see cars parked on the side of the roads and also will see that 'Lake Chabot Marina' sign. Park the car on the road and walk on the road next to that sign that takes you to the entrance station and the park parking lot.
From highway 580 south, take '150th ave towards Fairmont Dr.'
After the exit make a left on 'Fairmont Dr'. Fairmont drive becomes Lake chabot road after a bit. Just keep straight. Then you will see cars parked on the road.

You can also park your car in the park parking lot. But they may close the gate, in case if you get back late.

Approx GPS for the roadside parking: N[masked] W[masked]

Here's the street view which shows the 'Lake Chabot Marina' sign and the gated road which takes you to the park parking lot.

Here's an address for the location that you can put in your GPS, if you can't use coordinates:
17600 Lake Chabot Road
Castro Valley, CA 94546

Please try to carpool to avoid getting lost by yourself. Also, keep track of your carpools when you are hiking so you don't have to search for them after you come back to the parking lot :)

Bring warm clothing, blankets etc. It may be chilly there. Also, bring flashlights/headlamps if you have, though you may not need them. Most of the way is paved on the way back.

Dogs are allowed in the park smile

Disclaimer: Its your own responsibility to look after yourself on the event if u decide to join us. You assume all the risks including sharing my food ;)

NOTE: As usual, since meetup site does not allow 'maybe' responses, feel free to rsvp yes or no if you are not sure and show up or not :) Also, if you are going to be late and want to catch up, make sure you have a map and know where to go or just take the shorter route. We'll probably wait for about 15 mins since we want to get to the dinner spot before it gets dark :)
