Full moon hike at Marin Headlands

  • Oct 29, 2012 · 7:00 PM

Here's another chance to do a fun hike under the full moon, get some exercise and have some fun :)

This will be about 5.6 mile [round trip] hike starting from the trailhead near Rodeo lagoon along the bunker road to Slacker hill which will be the dinner spot
The hike is mostly moderate with gradual climb with the last half mile steeeeeeep.

We'll hangout at the top for a while  enjoying the moon depending on how nice it is there. So if you are in a hurry to get back earlier, try to have the map, knowledge of the way back and someone with you so you don't get lost [but don't try to make the whole group leave with you ;)]

As usual, bring wine and some food/snack to share ;) Also try to bring a cup if you want to share the wine.

The dinner spot is not paved, so a blanket is recommended if you have one.
I will bring a blanket or something to keep the food collection on, a lantern and some paper plates.
Feel free to bring a lantern, plates whatever you have that you can bring :)

It's not a paved path up to the dinner spot, so don't forget your headlamp/flashlight, so you don't trip and fall [especially if you had wine ;)].
And bring jacket/blanket....anything to keep you warm and cozy as it may be chilly up there.

Try to stick to your carpools and not hike alone as it is easy to get lost there. It's very dark [except for the moon].
Also if you have not been here, there is a good chance you will miss the slacker hill path. So try to wait at the junctions in that case :)

We should be back at the parking lot by around 11pm or a bit after depending on how much fun/cold it is up there [but you are welcome to go back early if you like].

Please read this carefully as this is not a paved parking lot at the Rodeo beach that everyone knows about. This is a big dirt parking lot along the bunker road on the right, just after the Marin headlands visitor center turn after you cross bridge over Rodeo lagoon. May be hard to see at night.

We'll meet at the parking lot at 7:00pm and may be start walking around 7:15 or so.

From SF, cross the Golden Gate Bridge and exit at Alexander (the first exit past the view point turnoff). Keep right at the first fork.
After about 0.3 mile, turn left onto Bunker Road [watch for the brown park signs.
There is a one-way tunnel which cuts under 101, and you may need to wait up to 5 minutes for your turn to travel through it.
From the other side of the tunnel [from the white line on the road for cars waiting on the other side], drive about 2.2 miles to the dirt parking lot on the right side of the road. Keep a look out after you pass the sign for Marin headlands visitor center pointing to left at a split.

GPS coordinates for the parking lot turn: N[masked] W[masked]

Here's the link to google street view showing you the dirt parking lot on right

Please leave a note on your dashboard saying 'full moon hike',['coast trail to slacker hill'] and contact number so the park police knows when they see all the cars parked. According to the visitor center, you are only not supposed to park after midnight. But they suggested letting the park police know just in case. Hence the note suggestion.

Dogs are NOT allowed on part of this trail

See u soon! :)

Disclaimer: Its your own responsibility to look after yourself on the hike if u decide to join us. You assume all the risks including sharing my dinner :)

Note: As usual, due to Meetup site removing the 'maybe' option, if you are not sure, just rsvp as yes and indicate 'maybe' in your comments. Does not matter if you sign up as yes and not show up or if you don't sign up and just show up :)
