What do you want to achieve with memory techniques? (school, competitions, personal development, etc.)

I suppose I just think a good memory is good to have. One time I had a professor who had memorized all 200 of our faces and names before the first day of class. I'm told this isn't a big deal, so I guess I want a memory that isn't a big deal :)
