I hope all is well. I'm sad to say the military will be relocating me in May 2014 and
therefore I will no longer be in the Bay Area. One of the items I am most proud of is being part of the SF Bay Area Gay Dads Group. I've met some wonderful
friends and their beautiful families. As a collective group, we've reached out with concerns, questions and ideas. The support the group has provided to it's
members is remarkable. For my last event with you guys, I would like to request a large presence at Our Family Coalition's NightOut on April 10th, 2014.
Many of you already know I serve on the Board of OFC and have relied
heavily on their services with the birth of my twins. As a single father unfamiliar with children, OFC's resources have been my go to place.
Our Family Coalition's 2014 Night Out! will be on April 10, 2014 at the InterContinental Hotel in San Francisco. It will be an inspiring celebration of our work with and on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) headed families. Will you consider being a table captain for this event, which means getting 9 of your friends and/or colleagues to join you at the table to enjoy this fun evening and support our great work!
A little about OFC. Our Family Coalition promotes the equality and well-being of LGBT families with children. LGBT headed families live in every community throughout
California, and Our Family Coalition strives to reflect this rich
multiculturalism in our work. We believe that all families benefit from our
work to build respect and acceptance of LGBT families across California.
I have been on the board for the last two years and am proud to say that this event has become a “must attend” affair for parents, members and our many friends and
supporters. Our event will be a vibrant sit-down dinner and awards ceremony
where individuals, sponsors and constituents will have an opportunity to
celebrate our families and our work. We will be honoring both a Community Ally
(someone who has stood with LGBT people in our movement for full equality), and
a Groundbreaker who has played an active role in helping to create a safer and
more respectful world for LGBT people and our children.
We are thrilled to give you an extra inside look at the
upcoming event by sharing with you that one of our honorees this year will be
the Huffington Post's Gay Voices (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/gay-voices/
) for their cutting edge work presenting stories about LGBT families
OFC remains the only organization committed to LGBT headed families with children and, over the past 10 years, has impacted the lives of thousands of LGBT families. We
continue to work to create safer schools and support the needs of LGBT
families, and have been at the forefront of the broader LGBT movement making
meaningful change in the world on behalf of our families and our children.
During the past year, OFC:
· Submitted and Amicus brief to the U.S.
Supreme Court that shared the stories of the children of LGBT families that was
important to winning support for marriage equality.
· Organized more than 150 workshops,
support meetings, and fun community events that reached approximately 750
families with 3,500 people.
· As a part of the national Welcoming Schools project, we trained over 600 educators and afterschool staff, and worked with over 280 parents in over a dozen school districts around California to support safe, welcoming and inclusive elementary schools.
In 2014 Our Family Coalition will continue to strengthen our programming, advocacy, and support for LGBT headed families, expanding our reach throughout California.
I look forward to having a great NightOut with you.
