Re: [gaydads-87] Parenting Question

Bedtime's really vary for kids -- and, they're often based on our own needs as parents (which are important too, if we're going to be there for them in the ways we want to be).

Personally, I need my evenings. So, I want my kids in bed early getting the sleep I think they need (with me getting the time I need). But I have the luxury of being able to pick up my kids from school and be with them until bedtime. A lot of dads can't do that, so they need the evening to spend time with their kids.

But young kids DO need a lot of sleep -- and a lot more than they often get. My son, Tate -- who's 6 -- sleeps from 7 to 7. That 12 hours of sleep is really what kids his age need. My daughter, who just turned 10, now goes to bed at 8:30. And she also likes to sleep in -- at least until 7, but longer if she can.

And then there's the other motivations.... If I could sleep in Daddy's bed, you could be damn sure I'd be sleeping there! I just haven't found him yet. And who'd want to sleep alone, given that option.

So, from my perspective, parents and dads really need to decide whether they want their kids sleeping with them or not. If they do, well they need to live (and sleep, as well as they can) with those consequences. If they don't want that, then they need to set firm limits and resist the impulse to cave in the middle of the night -- because, in a child's mind, that's only an invitation to train Daddy to be available whenever he's needed.

I'm looking forward to continuing this ever-so-relevant conversation on Sunday. I'm off to bed...

Thanks Mike,

Bed time is at 9pm.  7:30 they take a bath, and 8:00 till 8:45 we read books and then lights out at 8:45.  Her main thing is she wants to sleep in Daddy's bed.

Is she scared? Just having trouble settling down? Do you have a bedtime routine? Some more details might help us help you.
