From Heather's Mommies to Tango's Daddies: The Evolution of Family Affirming Literature

Children's picture books do not typically generate controversy, but when they portray families with gay or lesbian parents, or other "non-traditional" family structures, the reactions from adults can be quite striking. Book Club of California member Randy Tarpey-Schwed has researched the evolution of this category of children's literature and has in the process acquired a virtually complete collection of every example of the genre from the first twenty-five years of its existence. Monday, September 30, 5-7pm. More info at http://www.bccbooks.org/programs/

Immediately following each broadcast, THE CAMPAIGN team will host an online Google Hangout - a Virtual Community Discussion - to connect with viewers in each city with local organizations in their region, including The National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, Our Family Coalition, PFLAG, and ACLU Northern California. In the News & Media

We Think He Might Be a Boy: He freezes when his music teacher divides the class into boys and girls, not sure he's allowed to go with the boys until she reassures him. He asks me to take down a picture of him as a one-year-old. "I have a ribbon in my hair," he says with distaste. He excels in his swimming lessons, loves his basketball class, learns to skateboard and roller skate. He wants to sign up for t-ball, soccer, karate, hockey, and-now that he knows he won't be forced to wear tights-a dance class.

S.F. shelter for LGBT homeless nearing approval: After more than three years of stops and starts, it looks as if the plan to build a Mission District shelter designed for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender homeless will finally be approved.

Federal benefits issues linger post-DOMA for gay couples: Following the Supreme Court's decision striking down the Defense of Marriage Act, the extent to which many federal benefits - taxes, Social Security, veterans benefits and family leave - will flow to married same-sex couples remains in question.

In Some Cities, Gays Face Greater Risk Of Becoming Homeless: Gays often lack the kind of support from adult children or other family members that prevents people from sliding into homelessness. In San Francisco, they are twice as likely to be homeless as straights, indicative of a problem in major cities nationwide.

'Fox And Friends,' Michelle Malkin, Angered By California Transgender Bill (VIDEO): The hosts of "Fox and Friends" and conservative correspondent Michelle Malkin just "can't get their heads around" a new bill in California that allows transgender children to use the bathroom in school that corresponds to their gender identity. And jeepers, are they mad about it!

Nick Symmonds Dedicates Silver Medal Win In Russia To Gays: After winning a silver medal at the World Track & Field Championships in Moscow on Aug. 13, American middle distance runner Nick Symmonds openly dedicated the victory to his gay and lesbian friends in his home country.
