HTML5 Multimedia with Bruce Lawson

About the Talk

A much-hyped feature of HTML5 is native multimedia. In this session we’ll look at embedding and into your pages, and how to make it work cross-browser and degrade gracefully in older browsers. Sound too good to be true? It’s not!

We’ll look at the pros and the cons of HTML5 multimedia and see how to write controls with JavaScript and CSS. We’ll also look at how HTML5 builds in support for subtitles and captions for multimedia accessibility. We'll build up a worked example, and look at what's coming just around the corner in HTML.next - and you might pick up a Turkish dancing tip on the way.

About the Speaker

Bruce Lawson evangelises Open Web Standards for Opera. He's been active in Web Standards since 2002, working with the Web Standards Project, the W3C Mobile Best Practices Working Group and developer education. He co-authored Introducing HTML5, the first full-length book on the subject.

He blogs at brucelawson .co.uk. You can follow him at @brucel

UPDATE:

Bruce, Live...from the UK

We're sad to say that Bruce will not be able to attend in person. BUT, he is very excited to give us the same presentation online, live from the UK, and streamed. This way, you'll still get the full @brucel treatment and have all your burning HTML5 Multimedia questions answered.

MeetUp

  • We will have an on-site meetup, thanks to IGN (the venue) and Kaazing (food & drink). We will project Bruce's presentation and you'll have a chance to eat, drink, socialize with fellow HTML5 enthusiasts, and possibly win a prize.
  • The first 15 minutes (7-7:15p) will be devoted to lightning talks relevant to the topic, HTML5 Multimedia. If you have an idea for a lightning talk (1-2 mins), please submit your ideas to the organizers by Tuesday, 21 June.

Schedule

6:30-7p       Meet, mingle, eat, and drink

7-7:15p       Introduction and lightning talks

7:15+ Bruce's talk (Streamed at http://www.justin.tv//marakana_techtv)

8:30-9:00p  Q&A + prize giveaways (*You must be at the venue to be eligible to receive a prize)

Please let us know if you have any questions. Again, we deeply apologize for not being able to bring Bruce to you in the flesh, but here's your chance to interact with him live and online, as well as meet your fellow HTML5-heads.

Thanks!

I would love to be estelle for a day ! I like to be live in the place of the presentation. I'm frustrated that I seem to get the meetup notices late enough that the event is almost always already filled and wait listed. How do others get the notice earlier ?
