How Does Humanism Influence Your Politics?

In the emerging tradition of these outings which is to not shy away from controversy, let’s have a picnic and discuss our political views.  We are rational and open-minded, and accepting of each other and capable of tolerating divergent views. So with respect, compassion and empathy let the discussion commence!

Bring a sack lunch (and something to share if you wish) a friend or two and join us at 11:00 at the top of Golden Gate park. Let’s meet at Haight and Stanyon -  the N Judah line stops nearby and there is a parking lot a block South on Stanyon. If you are taking the BART and not keen on MUNI, we can meet at 10:30 at the Civic Center BART exit at 8th and Market on the NE corner and convoy from there.

Good to see everyone, and great discussion. Here is an article that touches some of the things I heard today. Very serendipitous ;-)

I will be standing on the NE corner of 8th and Market near the exit to the BART station at 10:30. If you prefer you can meet us at the corner of Haight and Stanyon at 11:00.

Can you make it a little later? My train arrives 10:36. Byron, who offered me a ride, had to cancel. Or call[masked]

Leslie appears to need a ride.

Okay, I'll take BART to Civic Center, arriving on the 10:36. Who's picking me up and what does your car look like?

Are you referring to me? I think Jim was going via there, if that's any help.

There's a lot to be said for the article's point of view. Thanks for suggesting it! Before we all become too comfortable, though, it has been my experience that something very similar underlies much of "liberal religion," etc. Often, it seems, people want to deflect blame from themselves and are no more open to discussion than those they castigate. Emotion also enters in a big way, so people can't necessarily reason about what they claim. As a skeptic, I'd like to say "Show me!," but discussion is all too often subverted.

I am reading Jacques Berlinerblau's "How To Be Secular." It is causing me to re-think some of my assumptions, and think afresh about how to respond to the political landscape. This is a Canadian TV interview. . .

There is undoubtedly a relationship with this group to set the meeting time at 11 am on Sunday and the starting time of Sunday Service at UUSF, which I usually attend.

i don't go to church so that would never be a conflict for me!

I think in future it could be possible to meet more than twice a month, if there is sufficient interest and the organizers are agreeable. For my part, coming from the East Bay, Sunday at 11am is (luckily for me) the best time for the outing and Saturday at 3pm works out well for the monthly discussion group.
