Open Source Tech Can Improve Your City & Your Nonprofit, & A Conversation w/ SAP

The Dice team is leaving the office behind and hitting the road to reach tech pros up and down the West Coast. They aren't just stopping anywhere they can fit their bus. They are making trips to tech conferences; meet ups (that would be us); and just about any other tech event where we can find talented hanging out, learning, having fun.

Dice has tons of tools to help you enhance your tech career, plus 80K+ tech jobs to choose from, and it's our mission to spread the word.

We often bemoan the poor technology used in local government and the lack of engagement with the wider community. Confusing websites, lack of clear information and little way to meaningfully interact with government other than complaining at council meetings. We also like to think that small nonprofits can’t really contribute to the open source community. We’ll hear from Steve Spiker about how both of these are changing in Oakland and how geeks are leading the way.

Part I:

Oakland has a growing civic hacker community that is making roads into the government transparency and engagement world. We are creating new tools to make our local gov more accessible and more effective and we’ll show you how we’re doing it.

Part II:

Most small nonprofits don’t really imagine themselves as able to create or commission open source tech- we consume it only. But we can also contribute by thinking about our work differently. Spike will discuss the process that led to the generation of a new resource platform based on open source tech that is reusable in every city- all on a small budget. Think your nonprofit or clients don’t really have projects that could be open source efforts? Come and discuss these ideas!

Steve Spiker (Spike) is the Director of Research & Technology with Urban Strategies Council, a social impact nonprofit based in Oakland, and is the ED of OpenOakland - a Code for America Brigade.

He speaks nationally on data driven decision making in public policy, community development and applied social research. He manages the development of open source technology, spatial analysis projects and mapping systems. Spike has successfully advocated for open data policies in Oakland and Alameda County.

Also we'll have Nish Pangali who is in charge of the Technology Donation program at SAP's Corporate Social Responsibility. She'll talk about the use of data for the social benefit.

      :( I was about to say that if you're in SF just hop on BART, but it looks like you'd be coming up from Mountain View. Wouldn't you have to drive? Just curious why Oakland is harder? A longer or more difficult commute?
