First, welcome all of our new members! Thanks for joining SFTech4Good!

SFTech4Good is taking the summer off for some BBQ and relaxation.  However, we will list events that are offering discounts and are of interest to you.

August 6th at 6pm (date switched from July 23rd)  - Discounted tickets for SFTech4Good members to attend “Impact Investing: Business Innovation Conversation II.” Join a conversation on impact investing.  A panel of investment professionals will discuss funding alternatives for businesses to achieve both positive financial returns and community impact. Don’t forget that we have our own upcoming events and jobs discussion forum on the Meetup page.  We send a newsletter out once a month but with so much going on we can’t include it all.  Please check it out and remember to use it when you’re organizing something great or just hear about something interesting. Definitely share info on jobs!  It’s another way to bring more value to this great group! Thanks!

Also, SFTech4Good is on social media, so join us there! We have a Facebook page, a Twitter feed, and a Storify page. (There are others but these are the ones being used most now.) If you’re on those social sites, we’d love for you to give us a like or a follow!

a) Artisans & Entrepreneurs:   Disrupting Poverty in Afghanistan & India

London Business School has seized the rare opportunity to present a discussion between two social entrepreneurs who are transforming communities in Afghanistan & India through artisanal craft businesses.

The event is on Monday, August 4th 2014, at 6:30pm.

b) GeekList Hack4Good - event seeking volunteers to coordinate

Geeklist #hack4good is an international, multi-city hackathon movement that has taken the world by storm and set the bar for bringing together software engineers, hackers, ui/ux designers, product developers, founders, leaders, thinkers, and civic minded organizations together to “hack” together for social good.

This 12-14 September, over 3,000 developers will unite in venues in 40+ cities around the world and online to hack against climate change.

Collaborating intensively with leading NGOs, government and UN experts, scientists, businesses, teams will hack for 48 hours to build projects addressing challenges posed on three broad themes - Climate Awareness, Climate Adaptation and Climate Action.

This event will use technology to unite humanity towards a positive and sustainable future, and will showcase the most promising projects in New York alongside the UN Climate Summit.

With participants already signed up in over 100 cities around the world, this could be the world's biggest gathering of technology specialists, software developers and people who can build and launch products quickly that has ever come together to address climate change.

Seeking: motivated volunteers who share our vision of combating climate change through technological solutions. Programming experience isn’t required to help out. There’s a lot of work to be done in the lead up to the event, and on the weekend itself, so we greatly appreciate any support you can give. Even if you are personally unable to help out, if you know someone else who might be interested, please pass on this message to them.

c) DonorsChoose data analysis with Looker - Aug 7

This is a product meetup for Looker’s data platform where the focus of the month is DonorsChoose. Email [address removed] if you have any questions.  And there will be food, drinks, and schwag!

On Thursday, August 7 at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, check out DonorsChoose data in the Looker business intelligence platform.  For: anyone who is a data analyst, a data scientist, or just BI (Business Intelligence) curious.

Come hack with Looker founder Lloyd Tabb. All participants will collaborate using Looker to generate unique and useful insights from the DonorsChoose.org dataset. Sign up to get your hands on the dataset in advance so you can start developing/exploring with the team right away; then join us at 4 PM on Aug 7th to share your findings.

All findings will be shared with DonorsChoose.org, and all participating team members will receive a free Looker trucker hat.

You can also get 1:1 time with Looker analysts between 4 PM - 6:30 PM to get answers to any questions you may have about Looker or LookML. Create dashboards with our new charting library, develop advanced metrics, or find new insights.

d) Edge Conference - proceeds benefit Hack the Hood

On September 20 at Adobe headquarters in San Francisco, the Edge conference will bring together developers with experience to share, who want to see and bring improvements to the web platform.

(Yes, we know this is the August newsletter, but tickets may sell out in August for this September event.)

Their emphasis is on creating a good environment for productive debate and discussion, rather than presenting the experiences of a single speaker.

Each themed session is an hour long, and starts with a maximum 10 minute talk by an expert in that topic, outlining the current state of the platform in that area. Expect this to be a fast moving and dense blast of information to get you thinking. The remainder of the session will be given over to an open but structured discussion, with a professional moderator and a panel of seasoned developers who have in-depth knowledge of the subject. They’ve been there, done it, and often bring different perspectives on how we can solve problems.

All profits from Edge ticket sales are donated to a charity that promotes education of the next generation of engineers who will look after the web. For Edge San Francisco 2014, we are supporting Hack the Hood.

A 2014 Finalist for The Bay Area Google Impact Challenge, Hack the Hood is a nonprofit organization working to introduce young people from very low-income communities to careers in technology, marketing, and digital media.

Launched in October 2012, Hack the Hood helps women, people of color, and LGBTQ young people become part of the tech community through training and hands-on experience building websites for local small businesses. Participants are mentored, develop professional portfolios and visit tech companies to learn about careers.

e) Bayes Impact - Fellows applications due July 31

Bayes Impact is a Y-Combinator not-for-profit (!) that deploys data science teams to work with civic and nonprofit organizations on solving big social impact challenges. They're leveraging the power of the one of the biggest revolutions in Silicon Valley - the data revolution - to positively impact our community.

Bayes Impact believes that true impact comes from combining insight with an absolute focus on execution. They work on a select number of high impact, high feasibility projects and rely on full-time fellows that focus on one project at a time, supported by leading industry and academic mentors, advisors, and volunteers.

Fellows are typically data scientists or individuals with advanced academic degrees in physics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, bioinformatics, or other related fields. They are looking for individuals with top-tier quantitative research skills, data intuition, and a drive for improving the social sector.

f) Women Who Code - seeking fundraising volunteers & advice

Women Who Code recently got 501c3 non-profit status and they want to have a big fundraising event this year.  They are seeking people with fundraising experience for advice. They are open to fundraising suggestions on:

• Individual donations

• Company sponsorship

• Grassroots campaigns e.g. events

g) LocalFreeWeb - seeking volunteers

LocalFreeWeb is a project that brings local, free internet for everyone.

Spearheaded by Joseph Tanigawa, with the help of volunteers, LocalFreeWeb is reaching beta stage. In order to move this program to production and made it available to the public, they need some help in these roles.

Content Writer: Someone who's comfortable writing compelling and engaging web content.

Legal Adviser: Someone has knowledge about law and regulations around telecommunication, non-profit and civic law.

Web developer: Someone who can develop a simple website that helps publicize the project. Skills required HTML, CSS, Javascript, Content Management System (ie. Wordpress, Drupal).
