Ruby Rookies: TestFirst & Learn Ruby at Tradeshift

Thanks to the good folks at Tradeshift for hosting!

What's all the fuss about test driven development (TDD)? Try it for yourself and learn Ruby by writing tests and passing them.

Goal - For rookies to learn to program in Ruby and get into the habit of testing.

Experience - All levels welcome, but probably best suited to those with rudimentary coding comfort (see preparatory materials below).

Format - We are rookies to programming, just like you.

6 - 6:15 - file-in, mingle and get acquainted.

6:15-ish - Break-off into pairs or small groups and help each other learn.  If you give it a chance, pair programming is really fun.  Come join us!

Preparation -
#1. Please clone Alex Chaffee's repo - https://github.com/alexch/learn_ruby.git

#2. You should have a text editor installed, know how to use your terminal, and have Ruby installed. (If you need help to get started with these, we are happy to help!)

Source/Prep -
If you're new to programming, and want a place to start, please check out:

#1. Codecademy ruby modules
#2. Code School's Try Ruby module intro

If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out.  Also, you can read more about Alex's repo (material for our meetup) at TestFirst.org.

Group - Stay tuned @RubyRookies

I didn't get confirmed earlier and I was waitlisted so made other plans. I wish I'd known that spots freed up. I would have love to come. :-(

Hi Linda - thanks for the interest - we missed you - next time I recommend you 'crash' us ... usually there's last minute cancels and so plenty of room!

Hi David, Thanks. Good to know that I can crash. Hopefully I can get in early on next time.

I'm 66% done with testfirst. It is really challenging and fun for a beginner. It's humbling and enlightening to see the posted solutions on learn_ruby.git. Also, this starts too early for me.

could definitely use your help at the meetup then!
