DATES:

Friday, January 13 (REQUIRED): Software Install Fest

6:30-9:30pm

Saturday, January 14: Workshop

10am-4:30pm: Workshop
5pm: After-party for volunteers & attendees

WORKSHOP:

This workshop is intended to reach out to women (and men) who are interested in learning Ruby on Rails. Men are welcome to come if you find a woman who wants to learn Ruby on Rails and come together.

In this workshop, we'll take you through building a complete web application using Ruby on Rails. By the end of the workshop, you'll have an application on the internet that connects to a database and reads and writes information. We'll meet up on Friday to install all of the software you need, and then spend Saturday learning and writing code.

Total programming novices, system administrators, developers in other languages, and folks who attended our previous workshops are all welcome. We'll have different classes separated by experience level. Each participant needs to bring her own laptop and power supply.

When you RSVP you'll be asked a few question about your operating system, level and type of programming experience, and whether you will require childcare. (Please let us know during registration or before the event if you need childcare- if no one indicates that they need childcare before the event, we will not make arrangements to provide it.)

We'll have pizza Friday night during the install fest and breakfast and lunch on Saturday.  Vegetarian options will be available.

**Anyone interested in volunteering as a teacher, TA, or with logistics, you do not need to RSVP to this meetup- there will be a separate meetup posted.**

If you have questions or ideas for us, the best way to get in touch is to send a message to the organizers.

It was really fun and informative. I learned a lot. I wish the morning section had adhered to its schedule better though so we would have had more class time.

@Jessica: You can get Xcode 3 for Snow Leopard on the Apple website. Go to developer.apple.com and either login or create an account. Creating an account doesn't force you to pay. Once you're logged in, then there is a link called "Looking for Xcode 3 for Snow Leopard?" that's where they can download the old Xcode.

My guest doesn't have Lion; is there a version of XCode for I think Snow Leopard? Is it true you can only get it if you are a paying developer?

Hi Gretchen- the meetup is full at this point and we won't be able to accommodate more students in the space...But there's already a bunch more scheduled for 2012, so keep watching the SF Ruby Meetup for workshop announcements.

I didn't sign up for the meetup before, and it is full (it also won't let me add to the waitlist). Will I still be able to participate?

We should have OS X DVDs and my back-up drive with copies of XCode on both for anyone who needs a copy. Parking around Bryant at 6:30 should be okay, meter enforcement ends at 6pm.

  • Linda Shum

How is the parking on Bryant at around 6:30PM?

hey all Lina Egutkina is attending as my guest since I am a man and have to bring one sister to get in peace and love!

Thanks for all your help Walter and Rachel and everyone! Definitely second the Xcode request! And also input about whether there will be childcare. Thanks!!!!!

Would it be possible for someone to download Xcode and put it on a thumbdrive? My guest doesn't have internet connection right now and will need to install it tonight. She has a Macbook but doesn't have her disc.

    1 · January 13, 2012

  • WalterYu

Fharzana: It averages around 1-2 hours depending on how much of the installation is done beforehand and/or troubleshooting we need to do, so it probably will not take the full 3 hours. Amanda: The Windows issue is regarding color display and should not affect installation of the environment itself. However, we can troubleshoot with you tonight.

I was unable to load Window Colors onto my, dare i say it, Vista 32-OS system. Link: http://adoxa.110mb.com/ansicon produced a 404p msg. Should anyone else be having the same problem!

Will it take the full 3 hours tomorrow night?

The OS X DVD is for installing XCode (find out by searching in spotlight or under "applications" in the dock), so no need to bring the DVD if you have XCode installed. We are working on getting USB drives with XCode in case anyone needs help.

    1 · January 12, 2012

  • WalterYu

Let me look into the OS X DVD issue and report back today. This is the first time I have seen it in the installfest instructions (we updated them recently). Usually students bring their Mac and install without the DVD.

    January 12, 2012

  • Fharzana Elankumaran

Thank you Walter for sharing those links. I think I can find my OS X DVD, but I use a MacBook Air. What will we use the DVD for? Maybe I can find myself an alternative solution.

    January 12, 2012

  • Alexander Tran

Thanks Walter! Does anyone know what we should do if we can't find our OSX DVD for Mac? I'm seeing it on the install instructions...

    January 11, 2012

  • WalterYu

Sure thing. Here are all links for this weekend: Questionaire: http://goo.gl/02j58, Installfest Instructions (Friday): http://installfest.railsbridge.... and Curriculum (Saturday): http://curriculum.railsbridge.o....

I also did not get a questionnaire?

    January 11, 2012

  • Cheryl Marquez

I don't think I got a questionnaire, I just signed up last night.

    January 11, 2012

  • Alexander Tran

I actually did not receive a questionnaire either. May I request a copy as well please? Thanks for your help administering Walter! Also, will their be a quite clean place for other childcare needs, like pumping/lactation? Thank you!!!!

    January 11, 2012

  • Fharzana Elankumaran

I signed up for the class, but don't believe received he student questionnaire. May I request a copy, please?

    Thank you.

    January 11, 2012

  • WalterYu

Got it. We will have someone available to help with child care. There is no separate form for child care, it is included in the student questionaire sent to the SF Ruby list this morning.

    January 11, 2012

  • Alexander Tran

Hi! Can we please have childcare at this event?I have a friend who needs it. Thanks! For some reason I didn't get a survey dialogue asking for my childcare requirements.
