The long waiting lists for Railsbridge workshops inspired me to put together an intro to Ruby session for folks who couldn't go to Railsbridge. We'll have pizza at 6 and get coding by 6:30. Bring a laptop with Ruby 1.9.3 and RSpec installed.
Don't have Ruby? On Mac/Linux, follow these steps: rvm.io/rvm/install/. On Windows, follow these: railsinstaller.org. Afterwards, you should be able to open Terminal (Mac) or a command prompt (Windows), type irb into your shell, and get a prompt that looks like 1.9.3p125 :001 >. (Type exit to exit it.) Then, back in your shell, type gem install rspec - RSpec is the testing framework we'll be using.
If you don't eat dairy, let me know and I'll get a vegan pizza. If you don't eat wheat, let me know and I'll give you the cheese that would have gone on the vegan pizza.
Great explanation of what test-driven development is, and even better demonstration of how to do it.

This was a great intro, although hardly a railsbridge make-up. Great to get thrown straight into paired coding and test-first dev. Very glad I went. Very newb-friendly.

got through railsinstaller and passed the irb test, but then error:
C:\Sites>gem install rspec
ERROR: Could not find a valid gem 'rspec' (>= 0) in any repository
ERROR: Possible alternatives: rspec
(I'm now at the event site)

Hi Linda! You're most welcome :) I will definitely do this again - hopefully before a month passes. Can't wait to meet you.

Will you do this event again next month? I can't go this Thursday but am very interested in attending next time!

Hey Mary, what about this makes you think it is a promotional event? We're hosting a free intro to Ruby class. That's it. It's no different than any other company hosting free events.

There is another RailsBridge event on May 12 and all the RB events are free. This seems more like a promotional event for your Dev BootCamp and that should be made clear.

Hi Mary. Sorry for any confusion (I've changed the name). I volunteered as a teacher at the past two Railsbridges (and several before that - Railsbridge was one of the inspirations for Dev Bootcamp, actually!), but at the last one, there were more teachers than students, so I didn't get to teach. I was bummed that so many students had been waitlisted who could have come, and that I didn't get to teach, so I put this meetup together. Hope that clarifies things.

I think it should be clarified that this is not a Railsbridge event, but it is an promotional intro to your bootcamp. Is that correct?

I'm going to do a practice run with 4 students on Wednesday night. If Wednesday works better for you or if you're on the waiting list, sign up here: http://www.sfruby.info/events/6...![]()

Is there a corresponding event for those who would be willing to come to the event to mentor? I only see the one for learners, and not one for tutors/TAs/mentors.
