RailsBridge Outreach Workshop is intended to reach out to women who are interested in learning Ruby on Rails. Men are welcome to attend if you bring a woman who wants to learn Ruby on Rails too.
** VOLUNTEERS: do not RSVP on this meetup page. RSVP on the Volunteer meetup instead. Thanks! **
** STUDENTS: read on, all the way to the bottom! **
Friday, June 8th
6pm-9pm: Software InstallFest (REQUIRED) PLEASE plan on being there for more than a few minutes. Things can sometimes go NOT as planned. If you've already got a working install of everything, we still want you to come. Maybe you'll be a great troubleshooter for someone! Or maybe you'll be able to tell a newbie something exciting about what's coming up on Saturday morning. Attend to install, attend to contribute more commmunity
Saturday, June 9th
9:30am-4:30pm: Workshop
5pm: After-party for volunteers & attendees
In this workshop, we'll take you through building a complete web application using Ruby on Rails. By the end of the workshop, you'll have an application on the internet that connects to a database and reads and writes information.
We'll meet up on Friday to install all of the software you need, and then spend Saturday learning and writing code. Total programming novices, system administrators, developers in other languages, and folks who attended our previous workshops are all welcome. We'll have different classes separated by experience level.
Each participant needs to bring her/his own laptop and power supply.
We'll have pizza Friday night during the InstallFest, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Vegetarian options will be available. If you have special dietary requirements, please let us know on the Registration Form linked below.
Everyone is welcome to take the workshop as many times as you'd like to. If you have already attended several workshops and are familiar with the install and curriculum, consider volunteering for part (or all) of the weekend. You've got a lot to share by now, believe it or not! And there are many distinctly different roles for volunteers.
** It's necessary to do ALL of the following to complete registration: **
1) Confirm that the email address you have listed in Meetup is actually one that you check on a regular basis. (We'll be sending updates, notifications, and to-dos prior to the event, and you'll lose your spot if you fail to respond in a timely manner.)
2) RSVP to this Meetup page
3) [Mac only] If you are bringing a Mac, you must download Xcode to your laptop by 5pm Tuesday June 5th. Here's a page explaining how: http://installfest.railsbridge.org/installfest/install_xcode Xcode is a very large file that takes 1-3 hours to download, and is only the first step in a more involved setup process. YOU ONLY NEED TO DOWNLOAD THE PACKAGE. INSTALLING IT AND OTHER TOOLS CAN WAIT UNTIL INSTALLFEST. (Though you're welcome to do some/all beforehand. Here's the URL that takes you through the steps http://installfest.railsbridge.org/installfest/ )
4) AFTER fulfilling all other requirements, fill out the Registration Form https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEJxRGJlQXV2dHRKYzAteUtfaVV2eGc6MA&ifq before 5pm on Tuesday June 4th.
You are not officially registered until you've completed all the above steps by 5pm Tuesday.
If you have questions, ideas, or need assistance, please do contact us. We want to make the workshop a great experience for all.
It was such a wonderful experience. It was my first ever RailsBridge Workshop and I just want to go to more! Everyone was so nice and I wish I got to know everyone. Food was delicious. I loved how the group was split according to skill level and that there was an install fest. It really helped with all the headaches that come with installation and configuration.
June 11
Our instructor, Sean, and TA, Dan, did a great job of explaining the curriculum and the various parts needed to get our app running
June 10
thank you for organizing such a wonderful event. I appreciate the time that the volunteers takes to teach us at Saturday
June 10
Thank you to everyone who participated in Installfest! We're looking forward to having you back this morning for a full day of workshop. Remember that we'll be starting at 9:30am. So please arrive between 9:00 and 9:15 in order to allow time for check-in, bagels, and coffee before we begin.
June 9
Sorry, folks, we're 100% full for this one. We would love to see you at the next one!!
June 8
Naomi, I would be glad to take your spot if possible. I've installed everything as per the installfest document. Carina, if there's a problem with this please let me know. If not, see you tomorrow. Thanks!
June 8
If there is anyone who can take my spot, I've just had an unavoidable delay, and won't be able to make the Installfest tonight. Thanks for scheduling the whole event though.
June 8
Hi Carina, if we have attended an installfest recently (2 months ago) do we still need to attend installfest this time? Thanks!
June 8
As soon as you get a volunteer to check you off as passing http://installfest.railsbridge....
you're welcome to take off early. We do encourage sticking around, if you're up for it. We consider Friday valuable opportunity for students to build connections among each other & local Ruby community. Plus we value having women at Installfest helping & energizing classmates who are struggling with install. Veterans know that frustration of a step go amiss for a while!
June 8
For Carina
I will be arriving around 7pm. I have already done most of the set up. Will definitely be there though.
June 8
If we've gone through the Installfest instructions an everything works smoothly, do we need to come tonight? Thanks!

Try copying the URL to a text document to check whether a linebreak or space character is being introduced into it. If that doesn't solve it, email me. [masked]
June 6
Kristie (and others): _If_ you do the rest of the registration steps by noon sharp, email me and I'll add you on Meetup.
June 6
Would you try accessing the form again? It's working for me, so hopefully it was a temporary glitch you were seeing. Do let me know if it's still erroring.
June 6
Carina - i just noticed there is one more step - the link below is spitting out this message -
The webpage at https://docs.google.com/spreadsh...
might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
June 6
To the folks with a +1, please remind your guest that they must also fulfill all registration requirements before 5pm tomorrow.
June 4
No need to upgrade Mac OS. We get folks up and running with 10.6.8 all the time. We'll help you work through that snafu on Friday at installfest. And yep, if necessary there are alternative approaches. Thanks for checking in on this, Allie.
June 4
My current Mac OS is OS X 10.6.8. I attempted to download Xcode from the App Store, but I apparently need OS X 10.7.3 or higher to do so. I then downloaded it from Apple Developer Tools, but was also blocked from installing it because I didn't have 10.7 or higher. Do I need to purchase an upgraded OS to participate in Railsbridge, or is there a way around this? Thanks!
June 4
Thanks for the catch. In the initial post, Meetup ate the link. Folks, in Registration Step #4, that URL is https://docs.google.com/spreadsh...![]()
