STUDENTS: SAN MATEO RailsBridge Workshop for Women - June 29-30

  • This location is shown only to members

Here's the Plan:

Friday, June 29th, 6pm-9pm: Intros and software installation (REQUIRED). We help you get set up and check your system to ensure you're ready to go. PLEASE plan on being there for at least two hours. Things can sometimes go NOT as planned.

Saturday, June 29th 9:00am-4:30pm: Workshop
5pm: After-party for volunteers & attendees (loc TBD)

**IMPORTANT**Please read to the bottom of this message**

This workshop is intended to reach out to women (and men) who are interested in learning Ruby on Rails. Men are welcome to attend if you bring a woman who wants to learn Ruby on Rails too.

In this workshop, we'll take you through building a complete web application using Ruby on Rails. By the end of the workshop, you'll have an application on the internet that connects to a database and reads and writes information.

If you have already attended several workshops and are familiar with the install and curriculum, won't you please consider volunteering? We can always use people for check in, logistics and to help teach.

We'll meet up on Friday for introductions and to install all of the software you need and get you checked off as ready to Rock on Rails! Then we spend Saturday really getting into the meat of the curriculum. Total programming novices, system administrators, developers in other languages, and folks who attended our previous workshops are all welcome. We'll have different classes separated by experience level.

Each participant needs to bring her/his own laptop and power supply.

NexTag.com has been so generous to provide pizza Friday evening, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Vegetarian options will be available.  If you have special dietary requirements, please let us know on the Registration Form linked below.

**Anyone interested in volunteering as a teacher, TA, or with logistics, you do not need to RSVP to this meetup. RSVP on the Volunteer meetup instead**

It's necessary to do ALL of the following to complete registration:

1) Confirm that the email address you have listed in Meetup is actually one that you check on a regular basis. (We'll be sending updates, notifications, and to-dos prior to the event, and you'll lose your spot if you fail to respond in a timely manner.)

2) If you have a Mac, you must install Xcode on your laptop before coming to the first part of the workshop on Friday, June 29. (Xcode is the software that creates a coding environment for you to build your app.) Xcode is a very large file that takes 2-3 hours to download, and only one the first step in a more involved setup process.  **If you need help, please contact Bill or Mary no later than Tuesday 6/26 at 5 pm! When you have it completed, please add the words "XCode Complete" to your RSVP. If you do not do this you could be dropped! If you do not have a mac, you do not need to do this--please simply add your OS to your meetup RSVP.

3) Fill out the Registration Form, which will provide us with details about your operating system, the type and level of programming experience you have, and whether you will need childcare. (This info helps us create a workshop that meets your needs.)  You must fill out the Registration Form before 5pm on Tuesday 6/26.

If you have questions or ideas for us, please get in touch.  We want to hear how to make the workshop a great experience for everyone.

Very happy to attend a class closer to San Jose. Workshop was productive for me. Lesson with Brad and Elise was very helpful. Both instructors were very good at explaining terms and how different parts work together.

Here is the daytime one (http://www.meetup.com/Women-Who...). It looks like some would like an evening one as well. If anyone can start one, please do so! I'll come and visit you some times!

Teresa, there is a language agnostic WWC daytime coworking group getting together at Mtn View on Wednesdays and all the alum from this group are welcome. I know that Kristie was gathering info, names and numbers and was interested in getting something going. I would love to see a strong RB Peninsula community grow out of this! Let me know how it goes!

Hey, I heard there might be a study group for alums in this area. I was just wondering if anyone knew the details. Thanks!

This was an exceptionally well run workshop. The quality of the teachers was excellent, and the material was appropriate for an entry level course. It was just the right level of challenge to keep students interested and focused.

Actually, Fritzie(and everyone else), it would be really helpful if you had your heroku account and your github account set up if you don't already have one. You should use the same email address for everything.

Hi Luba, yes, I have some people who did not complete the registration that I can move off the YES list. I need to ask you first: what is your OS? If it is mac, did you download and install x code?

    Hi MARY,
Other than install of XCODE , is there anything else we need to do ?please let me know, I have XCODE installed, and I have submitted the registration form too.

    June 27

  • MJ

Toni, the install feat is required for everyone for a number of reasons. It is also about community. If your set up is good you can help others!

    June 27

  • Donna Y

Hi I'm on the waiting list. So if Roxanne can't go can I attend. Sorry I'm new at this. Thanks. -Donna Y

Hey, I just changed my RSVP to 'not attending'; something really urgent popped up for the weekend. I know I'll be missing out so maybe next month!

    June 26

  • MJ

Natalie, to introduce new programmers to RoR and build a RoR app. If you don't have it and try to use the tools we use in our curriculum, you wil get errors. If you do not know what the workshops are about, I would suggest you review the website. RailsBridge.org

    June 25

  • natalie

Mary, what is the agenda for this workshop?

    June 25

  • natalie

Mary, I can run ruby and ruby web app without Xcode on mac right now... I am still trying to understand what it's useful for in this workshop.

    June 25

  • MJ

Lori, that is correct. It does not auto install the command line dev tools. We usually have those available on a thumb drive at the install.

    June 25

  • MJ

Natalie, X Code is your development environment for OS X only. If you have linux or win, you do not need it. If you do have a mac, simply search your system for "x code". If you do not find it on your system, you need to install it. It takes about 2-3 hours to download so it needs to be done in advance.

    June 25

  • MJ

Hi Prachi, simply add yourself to the waitlist, and follow the instructions above. When you have that done, I will move you over in place of a "Yes" RSVP who did not complete the tasks above.

Just got email from Bill on an XCode install question I had. 4.3 did *not* automatically install "Command Line Tools" for me, so be sure to check Xcode->Preferences->Downloads to see if it also didn't install for you. It's a 154.6 MB file so install it early!

    1 · June 25

  • natalie

What is the reason you must install must install Xcode on Mac? Could you please let me know? I already have RoR installed and can run sample web-app... What do I need Xcode?
