STUDENTS: Ruby for Beginners (new from RailsBridge Workshop for Women!)

The workshop is intended to reach out to anyone who identifies as female and is interested in learning Ruby Programming for Beginners. The workshop is emphatically transgender-/queer-friendly. Men are welcome as the +1 of a female-identifying student.

You'll be introduced to object oriented programming, and will write custom applications in the Ruby programming language. No prior knowledge of programming is required. This is is not a Ruby on Rails, or website development, class. Note also that there is no intermediate or advanced track. It's a new curriculum. We hope to serve more levels next time!

The sponsors will provide pizza Friday night, and light breakfast and full lunch on Saturday. Vegetarian options will be available at all meals. We will try to accommodate special dietary requests submitted in your enrollment form by 1:00pm Monday 8/21.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

You must bring a laptop and power supply both days.

REGISTRATION

It's necessary to do ALL of the following by 1:00pm Monday 8/21 to complete registration:

1) Check that the email address you have listed in Meetup is actually one that you check on a regular basis. (We'll be sending updates, notifications, and to-dos. You'll lose your spot if you fail to respond in a timely manner.)

This workshop was absolutely amazing. The quality of teachers and TA's was astounding - Jessie and Gabriel were so patient and engaging and I felt so lucky to be the recipient of such well crafted curriculum. I would recommend a Railsbridge workshop to ANYONE looking to learn more about Ruby. The Railsbridge community welcomes all levels of learners and is extremely friendly to newbies.

For those interested in continuing from where you left off on Saturday's curriculum, here's the permalink http://docs.railsbridge.org/wor.... Its final slides are each links to a series of projects (Personal Chef, Encryptor, Event Manager, and Event Reporter) and provide a list of topics each covers.

Amazing! This was such an incredible opportunity to be exposed to coding for the first time in a super-supportive environment. The teachers, organizers, TAs, and volunteers were so unbelievably cool, helpful, and patient with complete beginners (like me). I learned a ton, made some new friends, and feel super inspired to keep learning. Thank you RailsBridge!! I'll definitely be paying it forward into the future.

So excited for tomorrow! This might be a dumb question, but are there any costs associated with this workshop?

    August 23

    • Isa Herico

Hi Laurel, the RailsBridge community is a gifting one. Meaning many of our resources are gifted to us by our generous members & supporters to continue to equalize gender disparity. As students, the only cost is your time & dedication to be there both days. See you then!

If you've a Mac, please download & install that X-Code tonight, if you haven't yet! it's a doozey of a download. Tomorrow's Installfest will also be assessment-time, so we can make sure we're all grouped accordingly. See you tomorrow ~

Quick reminder that this is a beginners class, and focuses on general purpose Ruby programming. You'll get a lot out of this workshop if:

    * You have zero or little experience with programming in general
    * You have zero or little experience with Ruby
    * You want to learn fundamental concepts
    * You want to build basic programs

There is no Rails, or website development, in this workshop. If you're interested in learning Rails, this class can be a really good prelude.

    Hi,
I am 1st on the waiting list and keep getting emails that there is room, but when I try to sign up, it says there's no more room. Do people from the waitlist get promoted into available spaces, or do we keep missing out?

    August 18

    • Isa Herico

Fret not, if you are a waitlister or a +1, your chances of getting in are immediately escalated when you fill out the other Registration Form (see #3 above). We close registration this afternoon, and will move attendees by waitlist order, given that you've filled out the Registration Form. Please let me know if there's any other Qs that I may be able to help with. Best, Isa

Thank you so much for the replies. I actually filled out the reg form twice--but I am not sure I did so before the other 6 spots opened up. In any case, thank you for letting me join. I'm looking forward to it!

Is Xcode 3.2.6 acceptable? I'm (still) on Snow Leopard, and it looks like the [update](https://discussions.apple.com/th...) is behind a pay wall.

    August 18

    • Carina

Melanie, XCode 3.2.6 is indeed fine for Snow Leopard.

      August 19

  • Elise

Aw, no child care this time?

    August 18

    • Elise

Oops, sorry spoke too soon. I see that the registration page does list childcare.
