Ruby Rookies: Rails tutorials series - build a microblog

Weekly gathering to learn Rails using web tutorials and pair programming

This week:
Let's dive into an actual Rails app using the following tutorial and pair programming.

http://tutorials.jumpstartlab.com/projects/blogger.html

We will talk a bit about Rail's MVC framework, and see it in action as we build a web app.  Depending on our progress, we may also try authentication (login).

Pair programming - two people, one laptop.  One types, the other talks/directs.  Switch frequently.  Both learn in the process.  Trust me - it works beautifully.

Thanks to the folks at Catalyst Class for opening up their space to us. (Catalyst is a 12-week developer training program.)

Note:

(Basic Ruby knowledge is highly encouraged.  For installation help, try Railsbridge Installfest.  I am told it's the best!)

Other questions, please feel free to email me!

Can anyone tell me what kind of laptop I would need? Will a basic cheap laptop work, or do I need something fancy.

Hi Sylvia - Do you use Mac or Windows? You might want to go through CH1 of the Hartl tutorial (http://ruby.railstuto...) and see if you follow the set-up steps for Ruby and Rails. What matters is you are able to run the current versions of Ruby (v1.9) and Rails (v3.x). Please feel free to reach out if you have trouble following the steps in CH1. Also, most of us google for resources/help, but this is another good starting point - http://www.ruby-lang....

Might I also suggest brushing up on Ruby using this resource so that the syntax becomes more familiar? It's an online resource, so won't require any setup on your own computer. http://rubymonk.com/
