Telephony Is Sexy

Alex Kauffmann on Possibilities in Telephony

Alex is a recent graduate of ITP program at NYU. He has done several projects that involve telephony and interaction design as artistic media to surprise and delight. He will give a brief introduction to his approach followed by showing three or four phone-based projects.

You can check out some of Alex's projects here

Adam Odessky, Orange Labs, will demo and talk about how cloud communications are a crucial component in the creation of next generation mobile enterprise mashups that boost productivity and improve collaboration among workers. We also delve into other topics such as augmented reality to better understand how the two mediums can work together in the enterprise.

Jason Goecke, VP of Innovation at Voxoe Labs

Jason has two topics:
1. Sending good old DTMF over WebSockets for HTML5 rendering and XMPP/BOSH if you are concerned about the latest WebSocket bruhaha.
2. Asterisk SCF: At the recent Astricon, Digium announced Asterisk SCF, a framework that allows developers to create real-time communications applications that include voice, video and text and that meet the demands of a full range of uses, from embedded applications to enterprise and carrier solutions. Asterisk SCF is architected to provide the highest levels of availability, scalability, extensibility, fault-tolerance and performance.

it is great WebSocket is making into the standard (and to mobile browsers); still, for the production use and backward compatibility the 5+ years old approach with Adobe AS3 flash.net.socket may be more viable, at least as the fallback option. Also, Adam's presentation showed good ideas on using a smart device in IT Service Management industry: the industry is mature enough already. Enjoyed Alex's presentation. Waiting anxiously to project the youtube and twitter onto my windshield.

While there was a bit too much information (5 presenters and 6 presentations) the content was great and the enthusiasm even better. Definitely worth attending future events.
