Details: 44 miles, 3700 feet ascent, one long gradual climb, two short steep shaded climbs, some rollers and lots of fun, long, uninterrupted descents.
This isn't too inland, so it shouldn't be too warm.
Meet: 9:15 AM for coffee and pastries. Depart 9:30 AM.
Transportation and Parking: 12th Street/City Center BART is 2 miles from the start.
Neighborhood parking is free, but be sure you're not in a 2 hour zone. Possible streets are Trestle Glen, Longridge or Mandana all to the east where they intersect with Lakeshore. See map above.
This part urban, part semi-rural route goes from Oakland to Orinda via the classic Old Tunnel Road and Wildcat Canyon. We will then ride Bear Creek Road a bit and up the steep but short Happy Valley Rd. After coasting down into Lafayette, we'll continue over to Moraga. The last part of the ride will take us through the tiny town of Canyon where we'll catch our breath for the last ascent up the "legendary" Pinehurst Rd. It's really not terribly steep or long; takes me about 20 min. We will then coast downhill to the starting point.
The two main snack stops are Inspiration Point and Canyon Post Office. There are places in town where we can have a lunch stop.
Bring: Food/Snacks or buy some along the way for our picnic stops, 2 bottles of water/electrolytes, helmet, tube.
