Re: [yorkie-132] Today's Meetup Video

Hi!  My name is Bob Dee, and one of my two Yorkie sister-littermates - Cow, was diagnosed at seven years old with a porto systemic shunt (liver shunt) which we attempted to correct surgically.  While she grew back a new shunt (1 in 10 dogs that have the surgery do) I switched her to a b.a.r.f. diet, and she did fine, with no recurring symptoms for the next seven years.  About three months ago, her symptoms returned.  She lost about a third of her body weight, and couldn't hold down any food or medication.  I took her to UC Davis, and they said she's in end stage liver failure, with less than 20% of her blood flowing through her liver (as it's become fibrotic and clogged with tissue).  80% of her blood is flowing through a new major shunt at her portal artery at the entrance to her liver.  They've told me she has very little time left.  I have her on a large assortment of medication, including Lactulose, Neomaycin Sulfate, Denamarin, Famotidine, Ursodial, and Cerenia.  I've also consulted with a variety of wholistic veterinary practicioners, and am exploring what benefit's an alkaline diet might offer her at this time.  None the less, I thought it might be valuable to see if anyone in the SF Yorkie community might have found any success in treating end stage liver failure issues, so I am putting out this inquiry.  Thanks in advance for any and all of your time, feedback and/or assistance.
