Shamanic journeying is an opportunity to meet with one's guides and visit other realms of existence. You may go into a journey with a question, and meet various beings who will often give very good advice and information. This kind of work can be very inspiring and empowering. Perhaps above all, it offers the opportunity to develop an awareness of realities quite different from this one. However, if a participant's belief system won't go there, and she/he credits it all to imagination, it can still be a useful way to access information.
I have been practicing shamanic healing methods and studying the nature of reality since the mid-eighties, with teachers such as Angeles Arrien, Brooke Medicine Eagle, and Dayana Jon. I have now refined the process of shamanic journeying so that it works well both for beginners and for experienced journeyers. I start with a discussion of what shamanic journeying is and where it came from, and move into an invocation, calling in the directions and all energies that wish to participate in the work we are doing, for the highest good of all. Then I move into a short visualisation that prepares the journeyers and facilitates meeting with guides. Then I begin sounding the drum, keeping up a very fast beat for twenty minutes, during which time the journeyers lie or sit still. It's difficult to describe this further because it is different for everyone. You may think of it as similar to a night-time dream, except that you have complete control.
The word "journeying" can be misleading because the experience is sometimes very visceral, rather than what is thought of as "going somewhere." I suggest that everyone brings pen and paper, since the experience is sometimes quite complex and you may want to write it down, so that you recall the details. At the end of the journey, I invite everyone to speak about what occurred for them, but there is no necessity to speak if you don't want to. For more information, visit www.mikayaheart.org
