Believe it or not I have to start planning books for the fall and into 2014. I will be entering two polls later today. One is for the September & November book choices. I have chosen some of the "edgier" books from the library's "Books to Go" collection. Please vote and the top two will be our choices for those months. I'll also be entering a poll for October of Zombie/Ghost novels. Please vote for your top choice in that poll and we'll read that in October.

Here I'm starting a discussion of suggested books. Please add your suggestions to the list below and I'll poll on these in the future. I've entered these under some loose categories that I thought we'd try to hit during 2014. February 2014 will be romance month and "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn, a couple that really knows how to put the "fun" in "dysfunctional"!!

I'm looking forward to hearing your suggestions.

Science Fiction:
The Martian Chronicles - Ray Bradbury
A Scanner Darkly - Philip Dick
The City and the City - China Mieville
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card
Every Day - David Levithan (YA)
The Future of Us - Jay Asher (YA)
Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell
All About Emily - Connie Willis

Memoirs:
Just Kids - Patti Smith
Autobiography of a Face - Lucy Grealy
Glass Castle - Jeannette Walls

Dystopia:
The Road - Cormac McCarthy
Pure - Julianne Baggott
The Giver - Lois Lowry
When She Woke - Hilary Jordan
Oryx & Crake - Margaret Atwood
Never Let Me go -Katsuo Ishiguro
Age of Miracles - Karen Thompson Walker

Historical Fiction:
When We Were Orphans - Katsuo Ishiguro
Night Watch - Sarah Waters
Gentleman & Players - Joanne Harris
Dovekeepers - Alice Hoffman

Contemporary Fiction:
Dirt by David Vann
Heft - Liz Moore
Hologram for the King - Dave Eggers
thirteen reasons why - Jay Asher (YA)
Visit from the goon squad - Jennifer Egan

Thanks Chris and Sam! Keep the suggestions coming everyone! Nonfiction ideas are great Steve & Sam - since I don't read much nonfiction I didn't even include it as a category...lol! Enjoyed seeing all of you and hope to see more at our May meetup!

Another non-fiction suggestion: Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights and Murder in the Jazz Age by Kevin Boyle, a professor of history at OSU. A National Book Award winner that takes place in 1925 in Detroit.

Mercy Kill sounds good to me. I read Arc of Justice, and I would be interested in talking about it again. How about Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver?

I'm not sure which novels have already been read in the group, but I have a few suggestions based on books I'm planning to read anyway.

For Mystery:
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

For Historical Fiction:
The Postmistress

For Fiction:
Robinson Crusoe

Of the books you have suggested above though, I'd vote for either The Giver or Ender's Game as the next book.
