52 Week Photography Challenge

Starting in 2014 I will post a theme every Monday, except for January 1 which is a Wednesday.   Your challenge is to photograph according to the theme.  Publishing one photograph per week based on the 52 per-determined themes on our Shoot Miami meetup page.  Every week will have it's own album.  Please note that you have 1 week to take a photo and to post it.  Photos posted after the 1 week deadline will be removed from the album (no exceptions).

Some of the themes are simple and some not so simple. The goal is to challenge yourself and to "think outside the box".  This allows you to be more creative and expand your view as a photographer.  Please feel free to post details about the photo (when and where you took it and other aspects like why you picked that shot and or what technique you used).

This is a challenge and submissions should be new work taken the week of the challenge.  Remember that there is a way for us to know when the photo was taken ;-)

One photo will be picked every week and the winners will be announced at our Main Meetups as well as online.  In February of 2015 we will be hosting a photography exhibit for all the winners to have a total of 52 photos ;-)

Please note that you can only post 1 photo per week so pick your best shot.

So try it, challenge yourself!  You'll have an advantage for the first week as I am posting this meetup in advance but for week 2 I will be posting the theme on Monday, January 6th.

And here is our first theme:

Week 1: SELF PORTRAIT

This is from an interview on Exposure Guide of Self Portrait photographer Alicia Savage. In your opinion, how important is it for artists to experiment with self-portraiture?

I think experimenting with self-portraiture is so incredibly beneficial and important, especially when you are just beginning to really explore your ideas through photography. It gives you the freedom to test and develop the strength in your ideas and techniques beyond the pressure and expectations of others. In addition, it creates an essential personal connection to your work. Whether you want to be a self-portrait artist or use it as a form of experimenting – self-portraiture I feel reveals so much insight of who we are as artists and individuals.

Zizi I see people uploading and I don't have any idea what the theme is. I think I am not the only one confused. Are you giving us the theme of the week every week? FOR EXAMPLE WHAT IS THE THEME FOR THIS FIRST WEEK AND WHERE DO I FIND IT POSTED?

ZiZi, I have a comment: In this post you say that every week will have it's own album. But the first album you created just says 52 Week Photography Challenge. I would advice to add ": Week 1 Self Portrait" and so on to the next albums so people aren't confused. :)

    1 · December 30

    • ZiZi

Yes Glenda thanks ;-) The reason I added the 52 week portrait photo on that album was because members were not able to find the upload button for that album. The albums are generated by the events created so next week when the new theme (new event is added), an album will show up with that name ;-)

      December 30

  • Sharon P.

Where should we post the picture for this first theme- Self Portrait ?

    December 29

    • ZiZi

Hi Sharon, click on the photos tab at the top of the page. When you get to that page click on the upload photo tab. You will have an option to choose what album you want to use. Pick the one that says 52 Week Photography Challenge.

    December 23

    • ZiZi

Every week when we announce the theme, an automatic album will be generated just for that theme. All you have to do is click on photos, then upload and then pick the album where you will need to upload the photograph. Thanks Meli.

Are you planning to make any of the challenges geographically specific. I work outside of Florida from mid May through mid Sept and then will be off to Africa for 2 weeks. Will we be able meet the photo challenges from wherever we are?

    1 · December 19

    • ZiZi

Yes, you can shoot any where in the world.

      December 19

  • Tricia

Question: Must the photos be taken during that week or can you edit something from collection?

    December 18

    • ZiZi

It must be taken during that week, That's the challenge ;-)

      1 · December 18

  • James K.

I don't make the rules but do have an opinion. This is a challenge and submissions should be new work taken the week of the challenge. Some members have been long time shooters and have 10s of thousands of photos in their collections. It would not be difficult to pull one photo from that collection which would fit most any challenge. Where is the growth in that? Challenge yourself with new work. If there is an old photo you particularly like, there is nothing to stop you from replicating the pose, lighting, etc. Who knows? You may even like the new shot better.

    6 · December 18

    • Rui T.

      Agree!

      5 · December 18

    • ZiZi

Yes James you are 100% right. I will update the post to show that. Thanks ;-)

    Ready for the challenge! :)
