Let's have a spectacular indoor shoot at the Washington National Cathedral. This Washington landmark is known for its beautiful architecture and striking stained glass. We'll find photo opportunities in the main sanctuary, in the tower, the Pilgrim Observation Gallery, outside on the grounds...and even exploring some of the history of the Cathedral.

Let's meet out front at 1 pm. I'll be the guy wearing a press pass-like badge that says Shutterbug Excursions. There is parking underneath the Cathedral for $4/hour. You can try street parking, but chances are usually pretty low that you'll find a space. On the Metro, take the Red Line to Tenleytown/AU station.

See you there!

It was great meeting everyone, it was very difficult for me to take decent (if any) shots of the stained glass and other elements in the cathedral. It was very humbling seeing the work of others such as LeRoy and Kat that really captured the beauty and reminded me of how much I need to learn. Here are my shots from the Cathedral: http://www.flickr.com/photo...

I don't expect traffic will be much of an issue schools and businesses would have been resumed for three days...and most people tend to get out of town the next day.

Don't you think Washington DC will still be a traffic and tourist nightmare even a few days after the inauguration from people deciding to stay a few extra days? ?

I think that's a safe bet with tripods. Flashes might be okay.

Sounds great. I assume that we can't use tripods or flash in the building. Is that right?

I remember when the first stone was laid on September 29, 1907. It was a sunny day with the temperature hovering around 66 degrees.

Beautiful venue. Did not seem crowded despite several large groups and tours. Would love to go again!
    •  Every time I visit the Cathedral I find new and exciting objects to photograph. This time was no different. Observing the pros always provides great lessons and trying different settings on my own proved to be a valuable learning experience.
    •  Beautiful place, very difficult to photograph.

I split off and went on the docent tour - it was excellent - the focus was on the architecture of the cathedral and went for more than an hour! He (the docent) allowed photography as we toured and gave a terrific historical and artistic perspective to what we were seeing. It was wonderful seeing "old friends" and meeting new group members - and overall a most excellent venue for our collective artistic expression. Thanks Lyn for another terrific outing!
    •  The Cathedral was beautiful. I've lived in this area a half century and had never seen it. Wonderful opportunities for photography.
