Wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery

  • Arlington National Cemetery

Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA (map)

  • Last year I went to Arlington just after Christmas and found that every year a group called Wreaths Across America places a wreath at every grave marker. It was a beautiful and I wanted to share this opportunity with all of you. We will be limiting the number attending this event out of respect for those visiting loved ones. We will cover various areas of the Arlington National Cemetery and we will make a honorary stop in Section 60. If you are unable to attend I would recommend venturing out on your own to see the beauty of this honor.

I know it's early but when will the call be made for bad weather? Snow is so pretty but sleet can't be good for cameras and lenses;)

I will send an email Friday afternoon one way or another. You never know how it may change by then.

Is there an entrance fee to the Arlington with this event? I know that normally there is one. I think somewhere around $20.

I am sorry to those who have been affected by the date change. If there is anyone that would like to be an Event Organizer and schedule a second walk on the original date let me know and I am happy to post it a second time.

Ah disregard, I just saw the note about the 21st. If folks are okay with that, then I'll offer to act as organizer for that date.

For those who are committed to this event on the 21st, Road runner Photography meet up is organizing a similar event at Arlington National Cemetery on the 21st.

I'm sorry that this affected your plans. I am going to see if anyone would like to be the "organizer" on the 21st and we can put it up as a second option. At this time of year events like this may be canceled due to weather as well. Something to consider when planning in the future as you are living so far away.

I have plane reservations for the following weekend - made months ago specifically for this event... I am really disappointed with the date change. Don't know if I will be able to make it now -- I live in Florida.

How do I put myself in the "I want a spot" group?

What many don't realize is that a wreath is NOT placed on every marker. Naturally, Section 60 (Iraqi war KIA's) do, but many many of them do not. That's not to take anything away from the company that provides the wreaths - they do an outstanding job.

Oh gracious! No! My husband was at The Old Guard until May when he started working at Ft. McNair. The primary mission of The Old Guard is to render final honors for soldiers who have passed - day in and day out. Sorry to give such an impression.

Oh I'm sorry that I miss understood. I'm glad to hear that he has not passed and is still with us.

I participate in the wreath laying every year and if anyone is available on December 14, I'd recommend coming out. Thousands and thousands of volunteers come out to help place the wreaths (many of which have cameras slung around their necks). There's an opening ceremony at the Amphitheater followed by special ceremonies at President Kennedy's grave, the mast of the Maine, the Tomb of the Unknown, the Pentagon Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the WWII Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial. It's pretty amazing to watch the transformation from "bare" grave sites to row after row of grave sites with wreaths.

I am unable to make it out that day but if anyone wants to go that would be great. Thank you for participating.

Thank you! I, too, had heard about this but never went out to see the wreaths. I have no excuse since I live right near the Pentagon.
