US Botanic Garden in DC (Indoor portion)

There is an amazing gem of tropical plants and water features only minutes away from the Capital Building. This a great place to practice with a macro lense if you have one and if not there are many great chances for plant photography. So come join me on this tropical adventure during the drab of winter.

I brought my nine and five year old along and we all had fun shooting. It was great meeting the folks I met. I posted some of the pics my kids took.

I just did a map search and could find "100 Maryland Ave, Washington, DC 20001 or Washington, DC 20016). I did find 100 Maryland Ave at Washington, DC 20002 (just outside the U.S. Capitol building). PLEASE CLARIFY. Thanks.

    January 11, 2014

    • Susan W.

If you stand facing the Capitol reflecting pool, directly in front of it (the side facing the Smithsonian Mall), turn to the right and you will be facing the Botanical Gardens. You have to cross the street to get to it.

      January 11, 2014

  • Ron C.

After diligent search, I found that the official web site does say "20001" However...The mapping program clearly shows:
    100 Maryland Ave SW
    Washington DC 20024
It is at the corner of Independence and SW 1st St.

I have now spoken with the Director and they are reserving 5 tripod permits for our group. These will have to be shared among those who are wanting/needing to use them. Our group is down for January 12, 2014 date and upon arrival we will go to the Visitor Desk and receive our passes. They have asked that we try not to set up the tripods in the narrow pathways if at all possible and if so only for a brief moment. There is NO need to call them for a permit as they only give 2 out per day anyway. If you have any further questions in regards to the tripod use please feel free to contact me via email at vmamaphotography.com or by phone at[masked]-0687. Thank you and have a wonderful Holiday.

I called just now. There is a limit on number of tripods the gardens allow to enter at any one time. At the gardens' request, I emailed Lynford the email address of the official with whom I spoke at the gardens. The official will seek to make some arrangement with Lynford

    December 19, 2013

    • Mark P.

I would like to being a tripod. Can you let me know if I should call for a permit, or if you'll call on my behalf? I'll definitely being coming.

      December 20, 2013

    • Crystal V.

As the organizer of the event I have contacted the Gardens and I am awaiting a return phone call on how they handle group events. Please note that once I have confirmed how the Gardens would like to handle the tripod permits I will post here as well as send an email to all attending. Thank you!

      December 20, 2013

  • Crystal V.

As the organizer of this event it would be really helpful if 1 person (myself) posted updates in regards to the tripods. I sent out an e-mail earlier so I could find out how many people really need them. I will gladly speak to the Botanical Gardens myself with the number of people and see what would be the best way to handle the larger number of people. If you have not been to the location it is small and I assume that would be the main reason for limiting the tripods. I can discuss further options like 2 seperate time slots that may allow for more people to use them. I am asking that you please contact me with questions and information so that other's don't get confused with all the different versions of information. Thank you!

  • Dwight J.

Just called the Gardens and was told that they will limit the number of tripods to 4 or 5,but that there's no testriction on use of monopods. Folks can share the limited tripods or bring their own monopod.

    December 19, 2013

  • Neal

Just called, they are only going to allow less than 6 tripods the day that we are there. However, there are no restrictions on monopods.

I just called the gardens [masked]), arranged for tripod permission. I could only do it for myself, but it was super quick and easy. Be sure to state the date of the visit. They'll ask for name and time of visit and will have your permission waiting at the visitor information desk.

Will you arrange for tripods to be used?

    December 9, 2013

    • Crystal V.

I recently went and didn't need my tripod. I won't be able to get permits for all those wanting to use them. So if you feel that it is something that you need or want to use you would have to contact the gardens directly. Thanks for your understanding.

      December 10, 2013

    • Crystal V.

I added one of the photos I was able to get just by changing settings on my camera. No flash, tripod or anything. Just a 50mm/ f1.8 lense. Just so you can see what you can get without a tripod incase the permit is to much.

      December 10, 2013

  • Ira S

Tripod use is very limited and a permit is required. See link to Botanic Garden photography policy below:
