Scott's Run Nature Preserve hike and waterfall

Location: 7400 Georgetown Park, McClean VA

Scott's Run Nature Preserve is a bit of a hidden gem of Fairfax County, right along the Potomac River. This park does have a creek that runs through the Preserve and ends with a rather nice waterfall. I was there last summer and found it to be an excellent place for a hike and to get some nature photos. Parking is free, a bit limited but fairly easy to get to, the parking lot is at the intersection of Georgetown Pike and Swinks Mill Road. We'll meet up in the parking lot near the main trail entrance.

Although I was on the registered list, for some reason I'm not in the "good to see you photos." I enjoyed the day with all of you.

Nice day for hike. Water was shallow enough to walk out in.

I'm watching Art Wolfe's class and it's fantastic. Very inspiring. Buy it if you can! He's a phenomenal photographer, a passionate naturist, and a great speaker.

IMPORTANT: Just thought to share this info. The legendary nature photographer Art Wolfe is doing a FREE online workshop today noon-7. If you can't watch, it's just $49 for an on-demand to watch when you can. I'm one of those geographically illiterate folks. Don't have any idea how to do geographic coordinates. Can you help? Coming from Falls Church, what do I do once I turn left onto Georgetown Pike from 495 to find you? Thanks.

I just heard back from Tony B. at 1:44 AM
Ron, the gathering place should be at the gate to the park in the parking lot, which is at the intersection of Georgetown Pike and Swinks Mill Rd (across from Swinks Mill Rd on Georgetown Pike). The waterfall is at the end of the trail at the Potomac River. Just follow the trail and you will get there.
NOTE: That is NOT at 7400 Georgetown Pike.
NOTE: The directions above should be enough.
For those who can input coordinates into their GPS receivers, they are the coordinates I showed below: [masked] N;[masked] W)
Side note: I will be wearing mu usual red shirt and blue and yellow West Virginia hat...and also water shoes. Will probably have walking sticks as well.

And here's the link to the photo album with the snapshots I talked about. If anyone has a problem seeing it, let me know. As I said, the parking lot is at the intersection of Georgetown Pike and Swinks Mill Road. If you can see the images, you'll see that it's pretty easy to spot. http://www.meetup.com/shutterbugexcursions/photos/23243682/

Here's an interactive, topical map of the preserve. The waterfall is at the northwest corner, which has been marked on the map. I'll post a couple of screenshots from google maps to show where the parking lot is for the preserve if anyone is still having some issues finding it.

Mark has been back with me and assured me that the proper address is 7400 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA. From the map he sent me, however, I have determined that the starting point for the shortest hike to the waterfall is near geographic coordinates:[masked] N;[masked] W - just west of Swinks Mill Road (to the South). I'll be there by 9:30 to scope things out. I will be driving a black Jeep Renegade with off-road lights on top. Will also be wearing my traditional garb mentioned below.

P.S. I plan to be there well in advance of the 10:30 starting time to gather participants and answer questions. Precisely at 10:30, I will begin the trek. Not sure where to gather, but I shall check the geographic coordinates and see if I can identify a good spot.

Just read Susan Watling's post (below). I plan to wear shorts and my water shoes. The water shoes also have good traction.

Notice to participants. I will be wearing my usual "Meet-Up" garb...Red Shirt and Yellow and Blue West Virginia hat. Be sure to ask me about photographing waterfalls. I have my own preferences and have photographed nearly 100, in several states, so far. Be sure to bring a tripod if you want obtain the popular "cotton" images.

Went to scope out this place this morning - got there around 11:00AM. Pretty interesting place. There is an up hill walk to get to the falls - about 100' over 1/4 mile, nothing to worry about. I would recommend wearing some hiking shoes or shoes with rugged soles as you will be walking on unpaved rocky roads - you're in the country heck. Bring a towel, water, and an extra shirt/top. It was hotter than h3ll out there this morning. Here is a link to the shot of the falls I took: https://www.flickr.com/photos/yeahbouyee/14373497529/

Hey folks, I've got to head back to upstate NY to deal with mom's serious car problems next week so unfortunately, I won't be able to host this event. If anyone is willing to step in and help out, please let me know either here or via email. There's not much to hosting the event other than making sure that everyone has a way to contact the host and making sure everyone meets up properly. Thanks in advance!

If I'm home, I want to go. I haven't been over there since February. Just for those that haven't been there, a couple of places have ankle deep water to either walk through or trails across short concrete posts. Personally I prefer wearing my waterproof hiking boots.

    How strenuous is the hike?

    June 30, 2014

    • Mark S.

I would say mild to moderate, depends on the paths you take. There are plenty of paths to choose from, some are quite easy, others not so much. There's some up hill walking as well, nothing terribly steep.
