Dinosaur Trail

This outing will take us east to discover the Badlands of Alberta, and entails several different activites for the day. Our first stop will be Horseshoe Canyon which descends 60 metres into a coulee featuring many coloured strata of rock and soil. We will explore the area for a while then on to our next stop. The Rosedale Suspension Bridge traverses the Red Deer River and offers more spectacular views of the Badlands. For those of you not happy with heights, there is a park there to explore and some abandoned mining buildings to photograph. We will also have lunch here. Our next stop is the Hoodoos Provincial Recreation Area to see the famous sandstone formations. Finally, on our return trip to Calgary we will stop at one of the many ghost towns in the area to take photos and get a glimpse of a time gone past.

 WHAT TO BRING:

* Comfortable clothing and good footwear appropriate for the weather

* Lunch and plenty of water (tends to be a little warmer and drier out there)

* A camera to record the day

* Children and dogs are welcome to join us

DRIVING AND CARPOOLING:

* As per usual we would ask that you let us know if you are driving or if you need a ride when you respond on the conversation board. It really helps our planning and our goal is always to keep emissions as low as possible.

* If you are riding we suggest a stipend of $5 per passenger to cover the cost of fuel.

 * Please be there by 7:45 so that we can load and go by 8:00. Thanks.

It was a great day! Thank you again for organising it and driving. It was a nice group, nice weather and great places, I would have never gotten to see otherwise. I loved it!!

Thanks to everyone who attended today's outing. What a great group of people from all corners of the world who share a love of nature. Great company and conversations made for an enjoyable day. Hope to see you all on our next outing!
Thanks again to Paul for taxiing and Larissa for offering her car if needed.

I have a car and can take 3-4 people (depends how long is the ride, if 3 people would be comfortable to sit on a back seat)

Thanks and welcome aboard Larissa. We appreciate another vehicle to help us out. The drive should take about 1 1/2 hrs to get there. VeraBo: if you bring things from the list above then you should be fine. We are pretty laid back and inclusive so expect to enjoy the day.

Hi Darren, thank you for welcoming words, I am very excited about tomorrow's trip. I live just few blocks from MEC so I will be there on time.

I just talked to Paul and he has room for 6 passengers in his van. Does anyone else have a vehicle? I think we may be 1 seat short here as I count 7 so far for needing a ride. You are welcome to bring a friend if they can provide transportation for a few others. Please let me know by Friday evening at the latest. Thanks.

If you guys are short seats, I'll RSVP "NO" to make room. I've allready seen most of that stuff, though I'd never gone to the bottom of Horseshoe Canyon. (From the top, it idoesn't look that big, but I heard there was a "mudcooach" that also used to give tours of the canyon..

I would love to join this meet up and bring someone. If us two could join spontaniously, it would be so great if someone would let me know, that this is possible! Thanks

Should bring my almost-three-year old with me. Is it suitable? I do have a Chariot carrier or backpack to carry her. She's as active, but probably less disciplined than dogs...

It may be hot and a long day and I'm not sure that a toddler would enjoy the outing. We expect to do some hiking and descending into a canyon, plus cross a suspension bridge, etc., so it may prove to be a bad idea. We typically recommend that children be at least 10 years old to attend.

Hi Veronique, we also have a plein air painting picnic the following Sunday at Prince's Island. Your toddler would be welcome at that event and we'd love to see you there. Cheers!

  • Darren M.

Again, PLEASE let us know if you are driving or if you need a ride. So far we have one vehicle and in order to carpool we'll need a few more. I'll see if Paul and Bernice are coming which will provide a few seats if needed. Thanks.

How much climbing, hiking, and/or walking is involved?

    August 10, 2013

    • Darren M.

We'll be descending into and exploring a canyon, walking across a suspension bridge, and making several other stops, so I anticipate we'll probably cover about 8-10 Km over the course of the day. Proper footwear will be neccessary.

Is there a possibility to organize such a tour at some other time? I work at that day...

    July 31, 2013

    • Darren M.

Possibly next year. We will try to vary our activities between prairie and mountain sites. Hope you'll be able to join us for another outing soon. Cheers.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
