Nordegg Annual Overnight Trip and Hikes!

We will be staying at a the HI Shunda Creek, arriving Friday night, heading out for a day trip on Saturday, gather back at the hostel for a delicious potluck on Saturday evening and then maybe do another short trip on Sunday in smaller groups before heading back home. Depending on the group’s interests and abilities we will do one of the recommended hikes or split into two groups and/or make arrangements on Friday night as a group.

This is a great time and a chance to connect with other members in a wonderful setting and a very nice hostel, complete with hot tub!

This is a family friendly weekend. Dogs NOT recommended, as they must be kept outside overnight and always on leash.

PLEASE NOTE: Booking only through this meetup site.  DO NOT reserve your rooms/beds through the Shunda Creek Hostel.

What to bring:
Weather appropriate gear (layers, layers, layers!). Synthetic, water resistant clothing recommended instead of cotton.

Recommended Hikes
• Baldy Mountain (8km 3 - 4 hours) This is the round topped mountain you saw from the highway as you drove to the Hostel. It takes 1.5 to 2 hrs to reach the top where there is fire lookout. Don't bother going up on a rainy or very overcast day, as the view will not be as spectacular.
• Coliseum Mountain (17km Full Day)This is the first mountain you saw on your right as you drove in with a cape on it. There is a NEW trail head for this trail. The next part can be a little sketchy for young children or in bad weather conditions, take this part slow and be aware of snow covering or loose rocks. The trail is mostly scree in the shape of a half bowl. It eventually takes you to the coliseum part of the Mountain. You take the same trail to get back down.
• Crescent Falls & Bighorn Canyon This hike is 23km west of Nordegg. This is a very easy walk and family friendly. Just keep in mind not to get too close to the canyons edge and be aware of loose rock or dependent on weather, ice. Bring a lunch and enjoy the picnic area at the top of the falls.
• Siffleur Falls (14km Full Day) Drive about 45min. or 62 km west of Nordegg towards the Banff Park Boundary. Hiking to the first set of falls is a popular family hike.

Enjoyed the great hikes in winter wonderland and the diverse conversations about the outdoors, gardening, sustainability, economy, wildlife, music, poetry and more. Most exciting for me: I saw the first beaver (family) in real life! And three wild trumpeter swans! Couldn't have wished for more :-)

What a blast! .....of winter! A great weekend and even though there wasn't much colour to be found (that's the artist talking) it was made up by great feasts and good conversations. The guitars didn't hurt either. Sunday actually showed some sun and made for a good drive home. Will definitely go there again.

Just wanted to touch base to figure out where things stand for the carpool? I still need to figure out how I'm getting up to Nordegg. Gary or Nitin - my understanding is that both of you would still have room in your cars? I live near 17th Ave. (I can drive also if need be, but it sounds like there are already lots of drivers already).

Make your own arrangements for pick-up, because there are groups leaving at different times during Friday. It is much easier to co-ordinate on a per-vehicle basis. The meetup site is at the hostel.

Glad you're still coming Gary. Thomas - please contact the Shunda Creek Hostel and tell them you are coming with us. You can pay/use voucher when you get there. Does anyone driving have room for Thomas to come with them?

I would like to attend. I think Gary is cancelling so I can take his place. Where do I send money? I need to catch a ride too. I do have a free one night pass at the hostel so would like to use it if possible as I volunteered this summer and got the free 1 night pass. Ok please advise.

Just a couple of thoughts - depending on conditions (forecast is snow), spikes and gaiters might be a good idea. And to build on Chris's email, I think we will all need lunches on the trail for Sunday as well.

I have basically the same comments as Gary - I normally work until 5 on Fridays, but I'm sure that can get sorted out. I also haven't figured out how to pay.

Thanks for catching that. I've changed it to 4PM. We can work out exact times closer to date.
